In 1916, Jedediah Smith bought land east of town for $10 per acre from Burt Cullipher and started farming there with his brother David Smith until their death in 1924; then their son Jedediah took over the farmstead until his death also in 1984. In 1927-28, Harry Aiken built a home on land which he had acquired east of town between Superior Boulevard and Washington Avenue. Homewood has experienced many changes since its earliest days as an unincorporated community; it became a neighborhood during World War II when people moved into the village to support the war effort.

The early history of Homewood, Illinois is shrouded in mystery. However, it is known that the area was first settled by the Potawatomi Indians in the late 18th century. The first European to visit the area was Antonio de Leyva, a Spanish explorer and missionary who visited the area in 1786. In 1814, Samuel Hodge purchased land in what is now Homewood from the Potawatomi Indians. He built a small cabin on his farm and named it after his home town of Hoboken, New Jersey. In 1834, Hodge sold his farm to Abraham Lincoln for $1,000. Lincoln added land to his plantation and renamed it Elmira Plantation after his mother’s birthplace in England. Lincoln's wife Mary also acquired some land near Elmira Plantation. She called her new estate "Chesterfield" after her husband's birth place in Virginia. After president Abraham Lincoln died in 1865, one of his daughters inherited Chesterfield and changed its name to "Homewood." Homewood became a well-known fashion center during the19th century due to its rise as a cotton shipping center and its location close to main transportation routes. During this time period, Homewood also developed into an important bedroom community for Chicagoans living near downtown.
