Homewood is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 54,752 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Illinois and the largest in DuPage County. The city was founded on April 12, 1847 by General James K. Polk as part of a territorial settlement of Chicagoites following his inauguration as president on March 4 that year. The name "homewood" is derived from the Hometown Bonus Plan offered to immigrants who settled in Cook County during the early years of this century when land values were much lower than they are today. The first store in Homewood opened its doors on North Main Street on October 11, 1847. By 1865, there were three stores and ninety-eight businesses within one mile (1 km) of downtownChicago providing goods and services for residents of northwest suburban communities such as Wheaton, Arlington Heights, Lombard and Palatine as well as Chicagoans living east of Michigan Avenue. In 1892, when electric light became available across most of Cook County throughmunicipal power systems, streetlights began appearing throughout the community with new building fronts illuminated at night using Edison's filament lights which replaced oil lamps used until then. In 1925 City Council passed an ordinance establishing a Municipal Court to provide judicial service to citizens without legal representation or zealous prosecution by private attorneys but no prosecutions have ever been prosecuted against any person because of this ordinance since its passage except for two misdemeanor cases brought before Circuit Courts after World War II; these cases resulted in settlements totaling $3 million (2008 dollars). On July 1st 1908 Mayor John Whelan announced plans for the construction of a new ballpark called Comiskey Park which would serve as home field for both local high school teams downtown while also being used by various sports organizations including American Legion baseball teams playing exhibition games there before matches against other local leagues; these exhibitions were often doubleheaders with other sports events taking place simultaneously elsewhere in town including fox hunts etc.. The town was founded in 1848 by Methodist missionaries as a farming community near present-day Grayslake, Illinois. In 1875 it became part of Chicago when that city was created from parts of Cook and Williamson Counties. As Chicago grew larger and more diverse, so did Homewood's role within it – becoming an enclave for white flight from black neighborhoods in the city's South Side during the 1960s and 1970s. By 2000, however, most residents had returned to their original communities or moved away entirely. Today much of what made Homewood such a thriving community during its early years has been lost to time: only a few reminders remain of what once made this tiny town such an important center for religious activity (including Methodism), trade (particularly agriculture), music (the first church being built here in 1848), education (a school opened in 1850), housing development (beginning with land leased from John Whitmore), manufacturing (the first homebuilder in town coming out of Grayslake) and small business growth since then; all other aspects have largely faded away replaced by memories or history Repeat visitors are cautioned not to visit any specific areas as there may be some restoration work ongoing which can cause some items to look better than they actually do!
