The first European to arrive in what is now Homewood was French trader, Jean-Baptiste Chouteau. In 1801, Chouteau founded a trading post on the banks of the Fox River. The post served as a stopover on the Illinois and Missouri Trails. In 1809, John Jacob Astor purchased the rights to a tract of land west of Chicago that had been surveyed by George Rogers Clark. Astor named his new ranchland Cook County after himself. In 1816, he sold the land to Abraham Lincoln for $10,000. In 1830, David Leland bought 1/4 mile (0.6 km) of east-west track from John Bigelow near present day Miami Street in Homewood for $1 per acre (0).Bigelow built a wagon road between this track and his farmstead at present day Bassett Road in order to transport goods from Illinois to Indiana Territory overland. An extension of this wagon road was built northwestward into what is now West Town Township in 1835 by Andrew Jackson Pike. Pike also built anhouse and store at what is now State Line Road and Old National Road in Black Hawk Township in 1840; these structures are still standing today. In 1835, Isaac Lawless organized the village of Indianola into seven wards with two representatives each from black and white residents living within each ward; Lawless also established an election board to manage village affairs. In 1840, Philip Hales organized Aledo into four wards with one representative per ward; Hales also established an election board to manage village affairs. By 1850, there were 10 villages organized into 73 wards with 2 representatives each; however, only 6 villages remained actively functioning by 1860 due largely to political subdivision caused by difficulties encountered during war time when Native American tribes decided not to recognize white rule or capitulate unconditionally

Homewood is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,097 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Homewood were Mennonites who arrived from Pennsylvania in 1837. After years of growth and development, Homewood officially adopting its present name in 1907 after the location became an agricultural center due to the variety of crops that could be grown there including corn, soybeans, and wheat. The community experienced rapid growth after World War II when many people came to work in the defense industry or take up new opportunities during the post-World War II boom. In recent years, however, Homewood has been struggling with declining enrollment and a lack of economic opportunity as well as increasing crime rates which have caused some residents to move out of their longtime homes. Today's population of 1,097 people represents a wide range of social backgrounds and denominations with over 350 families residing within one large neighborhood on South Side Street just east of Cicero Avenue. This mixed-use neighborhood offers cultural attractions such as The Art Institute Theatre District (the only theatre producer outside Hollywood), Pritzker Pavilion for the Performing Arts - home to jazz concerts and Broadway plays - as well as shopping centers like Sears Merchandise Center and Harry S Truman Library/Museum on Prairie Avenue adjacent to IMAX theaters across from Millennium Park district. A number of important events have occurred during its history: On November 3rd 1859 local farmers gathered around a fire built by Amos Stroud near what is now Lincoln Park for what would become known as "The First Annual Town Meeting". Thereafter meetings were held monthly until 1871 when they became annual meeting annually except for 1890 due to lack of space at homesteads vacated by soldiers during World War I On October 25th 1870 John Wesley Taylor proposed that land be set aside For public educational purposes in what is now called "The Township" towards which he donated 6 acres (2 ha) including today's site where Harrison Elementary School stands In 1903 following passage by Congress providing funds for school construction projects throughout America's rural areas it was decided that township boundaries should be drawn along lines running north-south instead of east-west so that more expanses could be purchased adjoining larger townships thus resulting in today’s formulating boundaries

The community grew rapidly in the post-Civil War years, and by 1865 it had reached its current size. By 1870, Homewood had become an important rail town, and by 1890 it was one of the largest communities in Cook County. The population of Homewood peaked at almost 20000 in 1920, but declined rapidly following World War II. The community has since experienced a gradual rebound, and as of 2007 it was estimated to have a population of over 10600.
