The village of Homewood, Illinois is a small town located in DuPage County, Illinois. The population was 653 at the 2000 census. The post office was established in 1844 and the first hospital opened in 1865. The railroad arrived in 1870 and soon made Homewood a large center for trade and commerce. In 1893, Homewood became one of the original towns built along the tracks of the Chicago, Milwaukee Road (CMR). By 1900, there were over 100 businesses located on Main Street alone! In 1965, following passage of Act 421 which granted voting rights to African Americans throughout Illinois, many white residents moved out or left Homewood for better situated communities such as Rockford or Wheeling; however, some local businesses continued to operate until after the racially motivated firebombing of a black church here on Easter Sunday 1980 that killed four people
On October 16, 1847, the first Latter Day Saint settlement in Illinois was established on the present-day site of Homewood. The group known as the "Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints" (LDS Church) arrived in Illinois from Missouri in April 1846, and soon began to build a community near what is now Bloomingdale. On September 9, 1850, they built their first temple in that town.
