Homewood is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,748 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village of Homewood was organized on November 3, 1836 by Rev. J.H. Dickinson and others as a rural township under the jurisdiction of the Sangamon County Court House. On December 15, 1839 it took its present name from homesteaders who had come to purchase land in what is now Homewood Township from John Lawless and his wife Catharine in March 1829. In 1861, when Sangamon County was dissolved and merged into DuPage County, Homewood became one of the original townships within that new county; it remained so until its dissolution as well in 1932. In 1871–1872 an act was passed providing for the erection of public works within the limits of each township: these included a schoolhouse and burying ground for 400 people north of Rush Road (now Birch Road), a bridge over Big Rock Creek on which roads crossed it from east to west (now called Damen Avenue), alleys running parallel to those existing near Indianola Road (now Cicero Avenue) and Elston Avenue (an alley running along Loop Drive). A post office opened at Homewood on October 16th, 1872; mail arrived twice daily from Chicago via Soldier Field over the 1-mile long railroad crossing then known as Big Rock Creek Bridge (thepresent Damen Ave.). The first store built in Homewood was owned and operated by Fenton & Company; it closed in 1893 after becoming unprofitable because residents were not willing to drive two miles out to get their groceries there instead of getting them delivered directly to their homes or stores. Another early store operator was Hill Bros.; this one operated until 1902 before closing down due to competition from larger businesses with more efficient delivery systems timesaving methods like steamboats or railways transportation between stores'. In 1903 three men - George Wittell Jr., Harry Hickey and Willis Hickey - opened up Wittell's Store #2 opposite Park Row Methodist Church on Milwaukee Avenue; this business continued into 2006 when it sold its assets back to its original owners but still uses "Wittell's" brand name today despite no connection whatsoever with that store’s predecessor dating back less than 100 years! Two other early grocery operators were Smith Bros., which operated until 1912 before moving south across Cicero onto State Street; also operating here were Martin's Drugstore (#1) which began operations September 25th 1889 (#2 closed 1922) and Howe's Grocery #3 which began operation November 15th 1890 (#4 reopened 1954). From about 1910 onward general merchandise stores started popping up all around town – Moore’s Hardware&Joint Store #1(opened 1911), Hoyt’s Meat Market(opened 1911), Rosenthal’s ClothingStore(1911) – givinghomEWOOD an almost complete shopping center totaling twenty-six buildings! JVH Companies established a cooperative grocery store chain beginning with JVH Novera Food Stores at 1115 N Shoreline Dr.(opened 1913) followed by Kingman’s Grocery Co-operative#2 at 1135 W Sheffield Ave.(opened 1915); finally PHM Distributors established their distributorship here at 1201 N Shoreline Dr.(opened 1916). These companies are still active today although some have been mothballed while others have changed hands multiple times since they originated. In 1927 parts of Wrightwood Township were annexed into HomewOOD making it even more populated than before with 6,000 residents living there alone while 2 square miles outside the city limits served only by services provided by neighboring townships including Grayslake Heights and Wheaton Hillsborough! By 1930 there were 7 parks/landscapes located within reachable distance Of hometown centers including Roosevelt High School “Dirty Dozen Stadium” playground serving “Swingtime USA Junior Olympics Open Water Swimming Festival ceremonies every year during May/June large crowds attend enroute home for day trip swimming lessons during late morning hours offer entertainment nightly plus opportunities for swimmer development throughout summer months

In addition, other large employers that have presence or operations within Homewood include Wrigley Field (the home ofChicago Cubs baseball), Northwestern University's McCormick School of Agriculture, and Northrop Grumman Corporation's headquarters complex known as "The Girdler".
Homewood, Illinois was first settled in 1847 by the Methodist Episcopal Church. The village was named for a homestead on the west side of the road from which it derived its name. The village reached its peak during World War I when over 1,000 residents were employed in manufacturing and agriculture. However, after the war Homewood experienced a decline in population and economic stability. In the early 21st century, however, Homewood has began to experience an increase in population as families move into the area from other parts of Illinois.
