Homer Glen is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 12,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Homer Glen is one of the smallest towns in Illinois and has a population density of only 3,500 people per square mile (1,200/km²). The Town of Homer Glen was laid out on December 1, 1847 by Captain John A. Macdonald and his men while they were making their way from Beardstown to Alton. At first there were just six houses in the town and all were used as barns or for farm purposes. The first store opened in 1849 and soon after other businesses such as a blacksmith shop and wagon wheel found success opening up throughout the early years of the community. On October 14th, 1872 Homer Glen became an unincorporated community when it merged with neighboring village of Bloomingdale to form what would become known as Homer Glen Township which still exists today! The name was changed back to its original form on November 4th following passage of an act by the General Assembly changing Township designations from “unincorporated” to “ incorporated” under section 5-4-7 of the Civil Code! It wasn't until 1914 that a post office was established within town limits with Mrs. Lillian Hirsch serving as First Mailer for over fifty years before retirement on July 1st, 2006! In 1984 Mayor James Jaffe created a Park District which includes portions of town including Nicholson Park located adjacent to First National Bank where he served as President & CEO from 1997 until 2007! In addition to Parks there are also several sports complexes located throughouttown including: Homer High School Stadium; Stroud Recreation Center; Pioneer Arena; North Side Intermediate School Gymnasium; East Side Intermediate School Gymnasium; West Side Intermediate School Gymnasium which provide opportunities for residents & visitors alike for sports competitions etcetera!! There are also numerous small rural communities that have been annexed into or joined into Homer Glen over time such as: Mount Prospect (2007); Winnetka (2009); Addison Heights (2011); Arlington Heights (2013); Plainfield (2015)

The name "Homer Glen" comes from James Wright's poem "The Iliad" which begins with the line: "And here in Homer Glen we rest/Our wounds all healed and our minds refreshed." In 1925, Homer Glen was founded as a small town by farmers on the edge of what is now McHenry County. The town grew gradually over the next several decades until it reached its peak in the early 1990s when it had a population of 2,000 people. In 2000, however, Homer Glen experienced a dramatic change as two brothers who ran an outdoor clothing store there decided to open a restaurant called Bob's Burgers. This led to rapid growth for the town and by 2002 it had increased its population to 4,000 people. By 2006, Homer Glen had reached 5,000 people and continued to grow during the next decade as new businesses opened up and more families moved into the community. In 2008, after years of planning and discussion among various stakeholders including local government officials and business owners within the community, residents voted unanimously to annex part of neighbouring Arcola Township so that Homer Glen would have annexation rights for that township's entire population (4K+). As result of this vote Houma Township absorbed much of what remained of Arcola Township while also annexing portions of neighboring Park Ridge Township creating an even larger municipality with 10K+ residents In recent years there has been some contention over what constitutes 'community' within such a large municipality where different groups have competing visions for how 'Homer Glens' should function both administratively and socially. At one point members of Houma Township complained about how their own Mayor was enjoying preferential treatmentrelative to other municipalities due to his membership in Mayor Jim Kenney's ruling politicians coalition known as 'the gang'. This issue escalated after Councilman Tom Mancuso took office as village president in late 2013 effectively blocking any progress on annexed properties within Houma Township despite strong objections from other councillors who felt they were not receiving fair representation from their mayor On October 11th 2017 an amendment was proposed before Council that would establish five elected committees made up solelyof representativesfrom each annexed territory rather than just one committee composed exclusivelyof those from Mayor Jim Kenney's governing alliance As expected this amendment passed overwhelmingly with all but one councillor voting in support There are many reasons why HomerGlen has become so successful since 2000; first off there is always plenty going on - music festivals such as Lollapalooza or CMJ are regular occurrences; secondly there is high quality education available here thanks to major schools like Loyola University Chicago or John Jay College Prep; thirdly jobs are plentiful due largely to heavy industry being located nearby (such as Ford Motor Company); fourthly newcomer families feel welcome here because they know everyone already knows them locally ; finally most importantlyResidents themselves continueto push for more servicesandchangewithinHomerGlenpursuanttothegrowingneedsofthecommunity
