Homer Glen is a small, farming community in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is located about 7 miles (11 km) north of the city of Chicago on the east bank of the Chicago River. The town was founded in 1867 by men from Taylorville and Aurora. It was named for James Homer, an agriculturalist and civic leader who donated land to the village. The population of Homer Glen decreased from 350 in 1970 to 198 in 2000, but has since increased to about 476. The retail sector dominates the economy with two main employers being Sears Holdings Corporation and JCPenney Stores Inc.. In 2014, Home Depot announced it would close its doors in Homer Glen after 41 years; however, this did not affect overall business because other retailers have taken over that space. Homer Glen's nickname "The Hub" comes from its location as a crossroads between Chicago and Des Plaines on the north side of the river and Aurora on the south side. It also has connections with other villages such as Northbrook and Evanston through shared streets or paths that lead into or out of town. Homer Glen is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. It is located on the east side of Chicago, about 18 miles (29 kilometers) north of the city's downtown. The population was 7,752 at the 2000 census. The first people to live in what is now Homer Glen were Native Americans who lived there for many years before moving to other areas around 1836. After spending time living near Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin and then Racine, Wisconsin, they decided to move back to Illinois because of its good soil and climate. They named their new community Homer after General James Halleck – one of the first Ulysses S. Grant commanders during the American Civil War – because he had given them permission to do so. In 1872, a group of German settlers moved into what is now Homer Glen from Holland Township in Cook County. They started a farm that still stands today and raised chickens and cows until 1905 when they sold everything and moved away again. From 1907-1914, the United States Post Office operated out of what is now Main Street in Homer Glen; it was then known as First Street Station (later renamed Union Station). In 1915, President Woodrow Wilson visited America while on his way through Chicago and stopped at Union Station; he later said that it was "the best post office I ever saw." The post office closed down permanently in 1925 due to budget cuts by then-Postmaster General John Wanamaker. From 1926-1968, Homer Glen was part of Rockford Township; however, due to population growth within Rockford Township and lack of space within Homer Glen itself, it became its own municipality effective July 1st 1968. At its peak in 1970-1972, the municipality had a population OF 102 residents! However since then things have slowly but surely been slipping downhill; overpopulation has caused infrastructure problems such as inadequate water supplies which have lead to fires twice this year alone (in December 2017 & February 2018). One early resident of Homer Glen was Mr./Mrs.(First Name)* who arrived here with their families from Germany on October 3rd 1840/4th via boat from Hamburg Harbor aboard “The Lorenz” under Capt./Midshipman Fitch [of USA] Knewing nothing else than high seas dangers we came direct without looking for any other place possible only hopeing God would open our eyes also met some friendly Indians along way
