Homer Glen is bordered by North Aurora to the north and west, Byron Park to the south and east, Addison Township to the southeast, and Oak Forest to the southwest. The name "Homer Glen" likely comes from John Peter Homer (1790-1868), an American patriot who helped found Springfield in 1836. In 1876, he donated land for a public school in what is now Homer Glen. The first building on this property was built in 1892. This school was replaced by Griggs High School in 1957 after it became overcrowded. In 1965, Homer Glen voters passed a resolution asking Congress for financial assistance to help improve infrastructure within its boundaries. This request led to the creation of Griggs National Bank which has since been one of the most important businesses in town. The bank has also been instrumental in helping keep Homer Glen up and running during difficult times such as during the Great Recession; for example, it provided funding for new roads and other projects that have helped preserve many of its unique features. Today, there are several interesting businesses that call Homer Glen home: Griggs National Bank (which still occupies its original building), Applegate PSD (a pet retailer), The Gilded Cage Theatre Company (an amateur dramatics company), The Bell House pub & grill (a popular spot for foodie dining), and Noodle Shop (a localized version of Noodle Train). Additionally, there are numerous churches located throughout town including First Presbyterian Church which opened in 1917 and Holy Name Parish Church which was dedicated on October 26th 1902.

The name of the town comes from the Cherokee word "Homer" which means "place where everything is green." In 1818, General James K. Polk and his army were marching through the area when they came across a group of Cherokees living in this part of Illinois. They were so impressed with the Cherokees that they ordered them to move out of their present location and settle in what is now Homer Glen. This decision made by General Polk helped create a community that would thrive for years to come. The first settlers in Homer Glen were men who had come overland from Kentucky. They built fur trading posts and began operating businesses around what is now downtown Homer Glen. According to historical documents, it was not until 1844 that the first school was founded in Homer Glen. It was called Highland Park School and taught grades one through twelve. At this time, there were only a few hundred people living in Homer Glen proper but by 1847 there had already been erected more than twenty-five buildings within its limits! By 1860, there were more than two thousand residents living in what is now downtown Homer Glen! Over time, many other businesses have opened up within central city areas such as Oak Lawn and Lombard Street NW; these businesses have brought about increased business activity for both citizens and businesses located outside of central city boundaries! In 1967, when Interstate 35E was completed through central city boundaries making it much easier for traffic to flow along this important artery, commercial opportunities mushroomed throughout downtown Bloomington! Today, many entrepreneurs are finding new ways to market their products and services within our vibrant community!
