In addition, many businesses grew up around transportation: grocery stores such as Smith's Grocery opened near railroad tracks when they were built; auto parts store Auto Zone became one of the largest dealerships in Illinois; and automobile manufacturer Ford Motor Company opened its factory there after opening a smaller plant in nearby Wheeling. Despite these factors, however, many residents struggled during World War II as production at plants like Ford increased but prices for goods remain relatively low today because manufacturing has shifted away from Springfield into countries such as China and Mexico. Homer Glen is a small village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,493 at the 2010 census. Homer Glen was incorporated on November 12, 1889. It is named after nearby Mount Holyoke College. The Village of Homer Glen was platted on October 17, 1864 by Myron Pomeroy and George Hennepin. The first post office was established in the village on December 3, 1865. The name "Homer" was chosen because of its similarity to Mount Holyoke College (northwest of the village). On May 15, 1888, the Chicago & Northwestern Railway extended its line from Joliet through Homer Glen and into Orleans County. This made it possible for people living in rural areas of Cook County to access larger cities without having to leave their homes. In 1909, the Chicago & Northern Railway built a new main line east-west through Homer Glen and renamed it the Illinois Central Railroad. The Village of Homer Glen experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its proximity to manufacturing plants and military posts located throughout northern Illinois. The war resulted in an increase in population by over 50%. In 1961, voters passed a resolution approving plans for annexation by neighboring town of Oak Lawn which would have put Homer Glas into danger should it not merge with Oak Lawn as planned. Mayor John Fenton vetoed the annexation proposal due to concerns about overcrowding and infrastructure deficiencies within both towns combined; however, this did not stop other municipalities from considering annexations from Homer Glens residents over time. In 1984, voters passed a resolution authorizing Mayor John Fenton to seek annexation by Elmhurst Township because Elmhurst had outgrown its services as a Village-like community complete with full police protection and water supply capabilities within its borders alone In September 2002, following years of deliberations and public hearings process convened by then-Mayor Fenton following complaints about shoddy infrastructure conditions within both towns combined; approval was granted for merger between Elmhurst Township (the merged municipality) and HomerGlen which would bring an end to 45 years of separate government representation within Cook County .The vote occurred amidst much controversy as many city officials claimed that they were forced out of their jobs because they opposed the merger while others contended that they had been unfairly treated since separation had failed to meet their expectations
In 1847, the Illinois General Assembly passed a bill authorizing the erection of a town on the Chicago River. The town was named Homer Glen after an early settler, Joshua Homer. The first post office in Homer Glen was established in 1851. In 1860, the Illinois Central Railroad built a line from Chicago to Springfield, and through Homer Glen it ran. The town had two churches by 1865: First Presbyterian (founded in 1854) and Second Presbyterian (founded in 1865). In 1870, a school district was organized within the town and Homer Glen became part of it. In 1888, the last locomotive to run through Homer Glen departed from its route near West Side Highway and North Main Street; it had been running as a passenger train from Chicago to Springfield since 1887.
