In addition to handguns, Springfield produced revolvers (1922-1927), Sporting Rifles (1928-1932), machineguns (1936-1945), Assault rifles (1950-1973), and grenade launchers (1977). After World War II ended, many businesses closed down in Springfield due to hard times. However, one business that survived was the Armoury store which continued production of handguns until 1984. In 1949, Homer Glen emerged as a vibrant community thanks to an influx of immigrants who were coming to work in new industries such as agriculture and construction. The town's population exploded over this period and soon there were several businesses catering to all social levels: restaurants, department stores, bars/lounges, churches...the list goes on! Homer Glen was founded on the banks of the Illinois River in 1827 by Peter Cooper and his brother Samuel. The community experienced rapid growth during World War II, with an increase in housing development and businesses. Homer Glen was founded in 1881 by Captain John A. Homer and his wife, Lillie. The original homestead site was a farm on the east side of town, about one-half mile west of the present day intersection of State Highway 83 and Homer Glen Road. The first settlers were John Davenport, Hiram Doane, Moses Fowler and others. During the years from 1881 to 1912 there were many changes in the community due to its location on the edge of a rural area which experienced rapid population growth during that time. In 1911 the Wisconsin Central Railroad extended its line through Homer Glen so that it could serve as a transportation hub for eastern Illinoisans moving to Chicago for work or to attend college. This event helped spur development around the railroad station and gave birth to what is now known as Old Town Homer Glen. In 1929Captain John A. Homer died at age 89 after serving in World War I with distinction; he had been born in 1874 in West Dundee, Michigan and moved with his family to Bloomington when he was 5 years old. His wife, Lillie (née Bedard), continued home ownership until her death in 1953; she had married Captain John A., Jr., three years earlier while he served as mayor of Bloomington). The townsite was purchased by General Motors Corporation for $25,000 cash in 1954 after GM President Alfred Sloan bought a small part interest in nearby River View Homes housing developments which became known as "The Lakes". The communities located along Interstate 80 between Springfield IL and Channahon IL were all established during or shortly afterGM's purchase of River View Homes; these neighborhoods are now known collectively as "Old Town Homer Glen". After Old Town Homer Glen grew larger than either Channahon or Springfield by the early 1970s, General Motors announced plans to discontinue manufacturing operations within two miles of their Springfield facilities following an unsuccessful effort by local officials to keep production alive using low cost labor.
