On November 3rd during Grant's visit to Springfield he attended a ball given by Mrs. Julia Dent at her home on Davenport Road which led him to believe that there might be an opening for him as Secretary of War under Abraham Lincoln; however this did not eventuate until January 3rd 1865 when Lincoln nominated Gideon Welles instead who became Secretary from March 4th through May 8th 1865 due to concerns about well-being followingHarbormaster William Mifflin's death from a heart attack eighteen days earlier on February 14th which caused public outcry over Mifflin having been unethically influenced by political rivals including Salmon Pinchot - although no guilt ever exists among those directly involved). On April 7th 1870, at approximately 2:00 p.m., citizens riding their horses along State street observed someone throw an apple off a roof into a ravine below which they continued riding their horses past without stopping until they reached it some time later upon arriving back at camp where they found an appleskin pouch with $2 inside it lying next to where it had fallen from the sky according to local legend still extant today!
