One significant event that happened in early history occurred when John Donahue's father, Michael Donahue, who also managed the original land for what would become Homer Glen, donated 4 acres (1 km²) to make way for a public park known as "Donahue Park." This park would later be renamed after John A.'s wife Nellie Caldwell Donahue in honor of her husband's memory. Homer Glen currently consists of only one street - Elm Street - with most residents living on either side of it or within walking distance thereof; however there are plans underway to expand Highway 101 into what used to be rural farmland eastward into town until it meet Interstate 68 just west/northwest of town limits. There are also proposals underway to create several smaller streets within town limits that could eventually form an arterial road network linking all parts of town together while still allowing people access to their individual homes without having to walk too far away from them or drive too long distances! Homer Glen is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is the namesake of the Homer Glen neighborhood on the south side of Chicago. The population was 12,711 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in what is now Homer Glen were Irish Emigrants who arrived in 1847 from County Louth, Ireland. They founded a farmstead which they named 'Glen Cottage'. By 1860, many of these Irish immigrants had moved to Illinois and started a new community called Green-Wood on the east side of Chicago. In 1875, John W. Grimes bought property in what is now Homer Glen and began to build a home there that still stands today - he named it 'Grimes House'. A post office was opened in Homer Glen on December 6, 1876 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1914. When World War I began, many people left Illinois for war purposes. Many of these people settled near Springfield, Massachusetts where they built homes and businesses. Some of these people also brought their families with them and established settlements such as Westville and Northbrook nearSpringfield. When the war ended, many of these people returned to Illinois but some continued to live around Springfield until their death or retirement years. In 1927, John Withers purchased land adjoining Grimes House which he used as his family's summer home until he sold it to the City ofChicago in 1951 for $1 million dollars ($). This land became known as 'Homer Glen' after John Withers himself whose name graced its creation (he also donated land for public parks). TheCity took over management of this property from the Grimes family until 1988 when it reverted back to private hands once again through ownership by Trustees Of American University (TAU) who manage it currently while providing access by permit only to those studying architecture at American University or those working under an architectural degree from one of America's top universities approved by TAU staff members
On September 21, 1824, the first permanent settlers in what is now Homer Glen, Illinois arrived. The town was named after General John F. Smith who led a force of American Indians in an attack on the small Canadian village of Fort Dearborn on July 14, 1814. The initial settler population consisted of only 10 people and they built a log cabin and farmstead near the present day intersection of Route 66 and State Street. Homer Glen started as a small farming community with modest facilities. For many years it was one of the most rural areas in Illinois.
