Homer Glen is a small town located in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Illinois, about 25 miles (40 km) east of Chicago. The community was founded in 1881 by John A. Homer and his family as a farming community on the banks of the South Branch of the Styx River, which flows through downtown Homer Glen. The original name for the community was "Homerstown", but it was changed to Homer Glen in honor of John A. Homer's eldest son, who died in 1916 at the age of 42 years old while serving in World War I. In 1951, Homer Glen became an incorporated village under the name "Homer Glen Village". On July 1, 1957, it joined with neighboring unincorporated communities Lincolnshire to form what is now known as Mundelein Township. The first settlers to live in present-day Homer Glen were farmers who left Pennsylvania for Illinois because they found good farmland there and believed that Prohibition would keep prices down for their crops during prohibition-era America. The biggest employer in early days was John A. Homer's brother-in-law Tom Mixberger's grocery store which operated from 1906 until it closed its doors in 1978 due to lack of business opportunities after Repeal of Prohibition ended alcoholic sales statewide. The post office at 2200 S State Street served residents until it closed on October 15th 1953 due to low mail volume and competition from larger towns along US Route 63 northbound near Carbondale.. In 1955, a new Post Office building opened at 4451 Worsham Avenue that housed both local government offices and a bank before being sold off to Carbondale Mayor Earle Biddle after Mayor Biddle moved his city hall into that building when he took office on December 5th 1955 This building still stands today as part of Carbondale City Hall Annex Complex housing several city departments including police department, fire department and library system . Mayor Biddle also initiated plans for redevelopment around this time including plans for retail development on what is now Main Street east side Of City Hall across from Park Meadows Shopping Center . That plan never came to fruition however as Carbondale voters passed a referendum making Homer Glen an incorporated village once again on November 3rd 1960 . In 1961, Mrs . Mae Kappahl opened her own clothing store at 6012 W Adams Road which remains open today as Moe’s Clothing & Gifts
