The community was founded in 1892 by John Fitch and his wife Jane as a stop on their wagon train from St. Louis to Chicago. They named it after Homer Houghton, an American lawyer who had come to Illinois earlier that year with another group of pioneers. Homer Glen became a thriving mill town during the early 20th century with its two large mills providing employment for many people. However, during World War II it lost its jobs due to strategic bombing raids by the United States Army Air Forces and was largely deserted thereafter. However, thanks to efforts by local residents such as Mayor Bob Sawyer and School Board Member Art Larkin, Homer Glen has regained some stability and recent development has included new housing developments, a recreation center (opened in 2006), new businesses (including an ice cream store), and plans for a farm field that will be home to a horse-drawn buggy racing track and miniature golf courses.

Homer Glen was first settled in 1847 by Scandinavian immigrants. The name "Homer" was derived from the Greek word ὑμᾶς (homo), meaning "man." The community's early settlers were Lutheran missionaries who arrived in 1847. The first post office was established in 1849 and named after Luther Burbank, an American missionary who had earlier served as pastor at Lourdes Abbey in France. In 1870, the town became a rail junction on the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad and experienced rapid growth due to its location near two major railway lines and its close proximity to downtown Chicago. During World War II, large numbers of Japanese Americans were incarcerated in concentration camps located around the Midwest because of their Japanese ancestry or related activities during the war. Many of these people died as a result of starvation and exposure; however, some managed to escape and live until they were finally released by President Harry S Truman in 1951. In 1957, Homer Glen celebrated its centennial with an event that included performances by soul singer Otis Redding and country music artist Merle Haggard. That same year saw the opening of a new shopping mall called Park Plaza Center which anchored what is now known as North Shore Drive commercial corridor within walking distance of most homes in central Homer Glen. Park Plaza Center continued to be an important shopping center for residents throughout much of today's history despite various problems with its management which have included several bankruptcies among other issues; however it closed down for good in 2001 following years of neglect and poor maintenance by subsequent owners culminating with a fire that destroyed most of it including both floorspace occupied by Sears). Today, many residents still rely on park plaza center as their primary shopping destination although there are now smaller stores located elsewhere within walking distance including one inline skating rink which has been operational since 2004!
