Homer Glen is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 25,473 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Homer Glen is named after the Greek god Hermes. The first permanent settler in what would become Homer Glen was Elisha Goodrich, who arrived in 1819 from Vermont and homesteaded on a tract of land that included present-day Homer Glen. Goodrich's family continued to live there until 1875; their farm consisted of about . The most significant development in the early years of Homer Glen occurred when three brothers, John H., Samuel and George L., bought 8 acres (3 ha) of land east of Niles Road from John J. Brownell in 1872 for $1 per acre ($ 10/ ha). They began to clear it and build cabins and houses there until they sold the property toritz Brothers (the father and brothers of Russian immigrant Aleksey Tritsakov) in 1898 for $5 per acre ($ 100/ ha). With this purchase, the first evidence that settlers were beginning to settle into what would become HomerGlen appeared. A post office called Homer Glen was established at this location on December 13, 1872, by order of Governor Samuel Leonard Woodruff with intent to serve residents within two miles (3 km) of Rock Island Railroad Station on one side and Chicago on the other side. The original postmaster was James Sutherlin; he served until May 4, 1880 when Rev Benjamin Fenton took over his position. In 1888 rheumatologist Dr Julius Weiland opened his practice at 6100 Niles Road which soon became known as "Weiland's". Weiland later became president and CEO emeritus at Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company before his death in 2006 at age 94. In 1907 three men – Harry Wirths (1881-1964), Willis Auchterhouse (1884-1966) and Rollin Reilbach – organized an agricultural society called "The Open Fields" which purchased 3200 acres (12 km2) west of Niles Road from various farmers for $10 per acre ($ 200/ha). Their goal was to promote agriculture as a means by which people could improve their standard OFS living conditions while providing opportunities for local small businesses as well as promote rural development through education programs about soil health etc.. This group played an important role in developing commercial farmland adjacent to I-94 corridor northward starting around 1948 including portions now known as Douglas Park….. After World War II many private families subdivided their farms into plots nearer I-94 so that they could sell adjoining properties without having to go through USDA approved channels or wait years for approval from individual landowners…. One such example is Arthur Ashe’s 6000acre plot adjacent to I-294 just outside Streator Township today

The village of Homer Glen was founded in 1887 by farmers from Hardin County and was named for John S. Homer, an early settler. The first post office was established in 1889 and the first school opened in 1890. The first store open in Homer Glen was the Fenton Drug Store on Erie Boulevard and Center Road. The village experienced growth during World War II when many people moved to the area to fight in the war or build materials for war production. In 1951, Homer Glen became a charter member of the city of Chicago and its police department changed name to Chicago Police Department (CPD). In 1987, Springfield Township merged with Homer Glen and incorporated as aVillage adjacent to City of Chicago limits; this annexation increased the Village's population by over 20%. From then until 2014, under Mayor Rahm Emanuel's leadership, CPD operated out of two buildings on Dearborn Street – one which housed CPS’ Administration Building until it closed due to fire damage in 2011 and has been vacant since; and another building located near Cicero Avenue which served as both our Headquarters Annex facility for operations purposes up until that point as well as home to our Community Affairs Bureau until we moved into our current facilities on Orchard Road just east of Cicero Avenue last year vacated by CPS’ Administration Building after years of use as their Headquarters Annex facility
