Homer Glen is home to the Fox Valley Farms shopping center and the Homer Glen Mall. The first settler in what would become Homer Glen was John Hutchins who came from Vermont in 1836. He purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land east of present-day Webster Road and northwest of Cicero Avenue for $5 per acre ($40 per square foot). Hutchins named his new community after his birthplace, Haverhill, Massachusetts. It wasn't until 1881 when a group of Dutch settlers began to arrive in what would become Homer Glen and they named their town Nieuw Amsterdam after their new home country. They started to build a few homes but were soon joined by other English Settlers. In 1902, two brothers founded the Fox Valley Farms grocery store on Wabash Avenue which became one of the most successful businesses in downtown Homer Glen. The store was eventually renamed The Hudson's Bay Company Store before it closed its doors in 1957. In 1952, Arthur Forster opened an ice cream parlor called Forster's Creamery on Elm Street which became one of downtown HomerGlen's most popular attractions for customers and employees alike over the years! Thanks to this family-owned business being headquartered downtown for so many years there has never been any need for central marketing or purchasing services like those found today with big box stores across America; instead all operations are managed through individual sales teams located throughout the village! The acquisition by Sears Roebuck & Co., Incorporated (Sears) left much smaller Village Retail shops struggling during that time period as well as contributing to local job losses throughout company closures etcetera......... However due to some outside investments into technology starting around 2004/2005 improving online ordering capabilities becoming available making Sears finally able to compete with larger chains such as Amazonaws etcetera....... This gives hope that our once struggling Village Retail businesses may be resurrected at some point......
