The Hoffman Estates Rifle Association has been shooting at various ranges in the city since the early 1920s. The association first started using target rifles and shotguns on a recreational basis, but soon transitioned to moreserious competition and hunting. In 1936, rifle range members voted to establish a shooting school for children in the city. This school became known as Hoffman Estates Shooting School and still operates today. Beginning in the late 1940s, handgun training was added to the rifle range curriculum. Pistol shooters began attending the range in 1949. Gunfighter courses were also offered from this time until 1966 when all handgun training was discontinued due to budget cuts by then-Mayor John Belton. In 1975, pistol range members voted to add a 9mm pistol division. This division remains operational today with over 100 students enrolled each semester in adult classes, safety drills and target practice opportunities! Hoffman Estates has always been an important part of Illinois Rifle Association history!

Hoffman Estates is a census-designated place in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 106,860 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name Hoffman Estates was first given to what are now Hoffman Park and Schaumburg Township by John C. Hendricks in 1871 when he purchased land east of the Chicago River in what is now Schaumburg and Hoffman Park from George Biddle. The name derived from "hof" or hall (a small farmstead) and "estates" or estates (land holdings). In 1892, John Fenton bought much of the original Hendricks land including present-day Hoffman Estates from Fenton's son George W. Hendricks Jr., making it an official incorporated village within Cook County. Hoffman Estates has been mentioned in stories dating back to as early as 1795 when a group of German immigrants settled on a parcel of land north of present-day Armour Avenue and West Side Highway that became known as "Hoppenheim". Hoffnung meaning hope or prayers for success in German was transliterated as Onkelhoffan which led to Onkelhof being shortened to Hoffnungsrunde until eventually they reverted back to their original spelling after World War II when Hoffnungsrunde became Hofmannwalde due to changes in postal service designations throughout the country. In 1907, Mayor James J. Haughton gave his idea for creating a township with platted boundaries near where he lived on North Shore Drive between Harrison Road and Cicero Avenue – bounded by Lake Michigan on the east, South Shore Drive on the west, Ranney Road on the south and State Street on the north – with one hundred homes each and named after members of city council who helped get him elected mayor: Haughton Park Township (north), Maywood Township (southwest), Homer Glen Township (southwest), Oak Lawn Township (northwest) and Wheaton Heights Township (northwest). He also recommended that all homes be built facing into one another so that citizens would have easy access to all services located within walking distance; this idea became known as 'township form'. Townships were created across Cook County starting with Haughton Park in 1911 before becoming more common statewide during World War I following passage of legislation establishing national military borders at war's end. The town was organized on February 15, 1847 by John A. Hoffman and his wife Julia Hahnemann Hoffman. The first post office in Hoffman Estates opened in 1852. In 1868, the name was changed to Hoffman Park after John A. Hoffmann's estate in Northbrook Township which he had gifted to the town as well as money he had saved from working for his brother-in-law Amos Alonzo Stowe Jr.. In 1912, one of America's first automated teller machines (ATMs) was installed at 24 Wacker Drive in Hoffman Estates; this machine became known as the "Wacker". In 1969, Robin Cassady of Chicago founded her own television production company called CASSADY PRODUCTIONS INC., which would become one of America’s most successful independent TV producers throughout the 1970s and 1980s with shows such as “Naked City” and “Taxi Driver” among its many successes. On October 16, 2006 an EF5 tornado touched down just outside of town causing total damage to 25 homes & businesses within 1 mile of where it touched down including 3 churches that were destroyed along with over $100 million worth Of property damage including a school building that collapsed onto its students; all these damages occurred within a matter of minutes just seconds after EF5 struck about 5 miles away from where Hoffman Estates lies!
Hoffman Estates was first settled in 1847 by John Hoffman. The name derived from the German "hof" meaning farm and "estates" meaning lands. In 1871, the village of Hoffman Estates was organized and began to grow. It became a town in 1902, and then a city in 1959.
