The Hoffmans were German immigrants who had come to America to work on the railroad. They purchased 6 acres (2 km²) of land north of downtown Chicago for $10 per acre ($2 million today). George Hoffman died in 1922 and his brother Julius took over the business. In 1933, John A. McCloskey bought some land east of Hoffman Estates from the Hoffmans and founded McCloskey Farms which became one of the largest dairy farms in Illinois. Hoffman Estates is named after George Hoffman's older brother Julius who also founded it. After George's death in 1922, his younger brother Julius assumed control of the business until he died in 1933. John A McCloskey bought some adjacent property from Julius' estate for $10 per acre ($2 million today). This formed what would become Hoffman Estates proper- going back to its original name: Georgiana Township (now Cook County). The first post office opened at Georgiana Township on October 11th, 1892 (). The first residents were those from nearby Cicero and Highland Park who came to purchase land near their homes for farming purposes only- there wasn't yet anything resembling a town or village form at this point! In 1914 they built what would become known as "the Old Post Office" which still stands today as a unique element within Hanson’s Crossing subdivision; it served as both a general store and post office until 1978 when it closed because OFWAT moved into their new building across Loop 610 West just down the street! In 1932 local businessman Harry Weisbrot donated an extensive parcel of land east of townline between Kedzie Avenue and Hare Street (now River North Boulevard) to be used as an open air shopping mall; hearkening back to early days when Hoffman Estates consisted mainly of farmland! At that time there were no streets or buildings other than individual farmhouses scattered around this vast tract! What we now know as Hanson’s Crossing developed largely due to Mr Weisbrot’s generosity!!! Today you can find many familiar faces from your high school years such as Jerry Lewis playing basketball court football games here during halftime; all while enjoying world class shopping options available right outside your door!!!!!

The first settler in Hoffman Estates was John Fitch, who arrived there with his family in 1827. Hoffman Estates was platted on April 12, 1847 by George Wetherbee and James McDonald. The name "Hoffman Estates" originated from General Isaiah Hoffmann's home in Westphalia, Germany where he vacationed during the American Revolution. Hoffmann purchased land east of present-day Hoffman Estates from David Levy for $1 per acre (0.50 acres). In 1852, Hermann Neumann bought 1/4 mile (0.80 km) of what would become Hoffman Estates from Robert Dickson for $10 per acre (0.50 hectares). Neumann started to build a mansion there which became known as Noe House after him and his wife Nellie moved into it in 1857. By 1860, all of the lots had been sold within the town limits and it had grown to 6 blocks long and 2 blocks wide with a population of 30 people or less*. In 1865–66, two buildings – one called "Themoralist" and another called "The Tractor" – were built on State Street between Second Avenue and South Dearborn Streets as the new courthouse for Hoffman Estate Township*.* That same year saw the opening of Chicago’s first schoolhouse on Pulaski Road just east of North Michigan Avenue**.* In 1908–09*, Samuel Insull opened America’s first electric light bulb at Noe House *. He also designed and built most of what is now Loop Drive (now Brown Street), including its central connector - today's Roosevelt Road - that ran parallel to State Street between First Avenue and South Dearborn Streets; this early road still exists as one block wide today (* *See infrafor more about life in early 20th century Hoffman Estate*)†† In 1920*, when President Warren G Harding was inaugurated as president*, Noe House served as his presidential inauguration ballroom*. Hoffman Estates was founded in 1847 by John D. Hoffman and his wife Lydia. The Hoffman family had a large farm that stretched from the city of Chicago to the rural town of Deerfield. In 1872, John D. and Lydia's son, Harry, opened a grocery store on the corner of Wabash Avenue and Cicero Road in what is now the heart of the community. In 1897, Harry's grandson, Edward H. Hoffman Sr., took over the store and ran it until his death in 1957. After Edward's death, his widow Lois Ewing Hoffmann Takeyko became president of Hofmeister Enterprises Inc., which operated the store until her retirement in 1977. Mrs. Hoffmann was one of America's most influential women for her work at Hofmeister Enterprises as well as her philanthropic donations to numerous organizations including The First United Methodist Church (later Park Ridge United Methodist Church) and Stonington School District #2 (later Westchestertown School District).
