The first school in Hoffman Estates was built in 1868 by Mrs. Anna Bogan with help from Reverend Drury. A second school was built in 1870 by Chauncy Hahn with help from Reverend Drury and Mr. Kelley. In 1871, Rev. Drury sold his land to Isaac Sprague for $640 ($ which would be equivalent to $ in today's money). Sprague started building what would become one of Chicago's most famous suburbs – Hoffman Estates – on this land that he had purchased from Reverend Drury. Sprague dedicated his home "To Almighty God Who has given us our home." In 1877, William Ziegler bought shares of the stock of Rock Island Railroad Company for $1 per share which gave him control over much of southern Illinois within commuting distance of Chicago along what became known as "Ziggy Line." Ziegler developed a network of track roads that extended into Hoffman Estates providing access not only toChicago but also to many industrial sites located within walking or biking distance of each other including Armour Mills Factory Park (now Midway Airport), Eastern Dow Agrochemical Corporation's Beecham Forest Research Station #2 on Herndon Road just outside Ofrio Park Elementary School - now part of North Side High School - Peoria Arsenal Ammunition Plant on State Street just east of Kedzie Avenue - now Loop 12th Street / I-90E - Northwestern Gas Transmission Inc.'s Hammond Place between Cicero Avenue/I-294W & Highway 60 - all these locations are now part of Prospect Heights Development LLC., an upstart development company incorporated in 2013 that specializes exclusively in urban redevelopment projects located adjacent or inside walkingdistance Interstate highways

Hoffman Estates was founded in 1868 by George W. Hoffman and his wife, Emma. The city was named after him, and the Hoffmans donated a large tract of land to the city for development. In 1896, the City of Hoffman Estates was incorporated. The city's first mayor was J. B. Hennigan.
