In 1915, the name change to Hoffman Estate when it merged with other townships in Cook County including North Side (1895), South Side (1912), West Side (1916), Midtown (1920) and Near West Side (1927). The homebuilding industry peaked around World War II with over 100 homes being built at different sites within the town zone between 1945-1950 alone according to data from the Illinois Office of Housing Development . However since then home prices have decreased significantly while job opportunities have increased which has resulted in many properties becoming unoccupied or fall into foreclosure status
Hoffman Estates was developed in the late 1800s as a working-class community in the Chicago area. The town began as a small farming village, and gradually grew into an agricultural center during the early 1900s. In 1923, Hoffman Estates became one of the first communities in Illinois to be incorporated as a city. The city experienced rapid growth during its early days, and by 1930 it had over 100,000 residents. However, the economic depression of 1929 put further strain on Hoffman Estates' resources, and by 1933 the city had shrunk to just 25,000 residents. Hoffmeisterstown emerged as a larger community nearby, and during World War II Hoffman Estates once again became an important transportation hub for southern Illinoisans heading to war zones. However, after the war ended in 1945 the city's population began to fall rapidly, and within decades it had all but disappeared from existence. Today only a few scattered businesses remain in Hoffman Estates – most notably The Melting Pot restaurant – while much of its history is largely forgotten
