Hoffman Estates is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 20,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is named after Samuel Hoffman, an early settler and first postmaster of the community. The history of Hoffman Estates can be traced back to 1837 when a group of men from Quincy Township in McDonough County began improvements to a farm they had acquired on the banks of the Des Plaines River. In 1845, they laid out a town site on land that they had purchased from John Quinn and his brother-in-law, James Kappelman. The name "Hoffman Estates" was chosen for its founders - Samuel Hoffman (a native of Quincy) and George Washington Hines (of Westfield). The town site consisted of about 500 acres (2 km²). In 1853, Charles Wabash became one of the first white men to use water power to drive a plow in Hoffman Estates when he built the first wagon wheel factory there. By 1865, there were five firms producing wagons: Wabash & Company; Hendrickson & Co.; Dyer & Company; Gorman Bros., Inc.; and Greenleaf Wheel Works Limited. A locomotive shop also opened in 1868 by Captain John Stephenson at 4th Street and Dearborn Avenue to make locomotives for transportation within town limits. In 1870, Henry Ford established his company here as Ford Motor Company with headquarters at 4500 South Dearborn Avenue until it moved to Highland Park in 1927. A number of mills closed during World War II due to wartime shortages but reopened after 1945 as new businesses including American Weighing Machine Company; Packing House Corporation; Armour Paper Products Corporation; Stevenson Mfg., Inc.; American Metals Corporation; Mattress Corporation etc.. A major employer during this time was Abbott Laboratories which manufactured vaccines such as polio vaccine and chickenpox vaccine among others before moving its operations overseas in 1951.. After years of decline during the 1970s through 1980s due mainly to technological advances such as auto emissions control equipment and electronic components manufacturing industry growth resumed with several large companies relocating or expanding their operations into Hoffman Estates over ensuing decades including Sun Microsystems*, Intel* etc.. However recent economic changes have led some small businesses closures while others have beenccomplicated by impending corporate consolidation throughout Cook County*. As part 2
Hoffman Estates was founded in 1871 by George P. Hoffman and his brother Julius. The Hoffmans were early settlers of the area and started a farm on what is now the corner of West Ridgeland Avenue and South Cook Street. In 1875, they erected a home on the lot that would later become Hoffman Estates Golf Course. A year later, the Hoffman brothers sold their farm to John Hutton, who made it his major business interest. He also built a hotel on Ridgeland Avenue in 1890 which became known as the "Hutton House." After Hutton's death in 1907, his son Harry bought the hotel and renamed it "The Park". In 1922, Harry handed over management of "The Park" to his daughter Eleanor Roosevelt. It continued operations as an hotel until its closure in 1961 under then-Mayor Richard M. Daley's patronage. In 1959, when Illinois merged with Indiana, Hoffman Estates joined Indianapolis as one of its municipalities. Since then, many changes have taken place within Hoffman Estates – from its primarily residential character to becoming an increasingly commercial center due to its location near several large companies such as Lucasfilm Ltd., Ford Motor Company and Monsanto Co.. A new shopping mall has been built on Courthouse Road south of the original golf course area; however much development has yet to take place within this largely rural setting.
