The village was created on December 1, 1868 from parts of the town of Hinsdale and westward from Chicago. Its first mayor was John D. Rockefeller Sr.. In 1875, it had a population of 604 and its first post office opened in March of that year. According to the 2010 census, Hinsdale has a total area of , all land. As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 24,965 people in Hinsdale Village (including those living in unincorporated portions) and 14,272 residents in Cook County as a whole. The median age was 43 years old; 27% were under the age of 18; 11% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 34% were 25 to 44; 21% were 45 to 64; and 10% were 65 years or older. The gender makeup of Hinsville was 49% male and 50% female. Aschenbach Township included most of what is now Hinsdale Village but did not become part of Hinville until 1974

Hinsdale, Illinois is a small city located in the east central part of the United States. The population was 38,747 at the 2010 census. Hinsdale is one of the oldest towns in Illinois and has been around since 1812. The first settler in what is now Hinsdale was James Caldwell, who started out as a fur trader on the Great Lakes region. He built a cabin near present day Pekin and named it Caldwellsville after his father-in-law, George Washington Caldwell. In 1829, Edwin Way founded way station #1 on the Chicago River, which became an important transportation hub for goods travelling between Cook County and Indiana Territory. In 1837, John Smedley arrived in Hinsdale with his family and began to establish farm acreage around present day Notre Dame Road and Main Street. By 1840, all of Hinsdale had a population of over 150 people! In 1850, when Illinois became a state, Hinsdale was incorporated as a town under the name of "Hinsdale." The first post office opened in 1865 and remained open until 1974. One of the earliest businesses established in town was Waugh's Lumber Company which operated from 1872 to 1901. This company supplied lumber to many local homes including those built by Presidents Ulysses S Grant and Franklin D Roosevelt. Other early businesses established in town include Jorgensen's grocery store (1875), Kapp's menagerie (1900), Burch & Dowling mercantile store (1901), William Atherton Clothing Manufacturing Company (1904), and Harry Fenton Realty Company (1910). Today there are few remaining pre-20th century businesses left in Town Square but there are plenty of historical landmarks that visitors can explore such as Hillcrest Cemetery (1872) which contains some of America’s most famous graves such as American author Herman Melville and Revolutionary War General James Wolfe; Stonington Methodist Episcopal Church dating back to 1796; Gales Drug Store building that served as both Post Office & Police Station from 1903 until its closing during World War II; original bank building that used to stand on Main Street where today you can find several restaurants including Joe's Pizza & Pasta; former fire department quarters now used by education nonprofit Midwest Institute for Rural Education; old school bus garage still stands across from Presbyterian School
