In the early 1900s, Hinsdale was home to a thriving gun laser industry. Gun lasers were used in handguns and shotguns to fire projectiles by causing an electric current to flow through a metal tube, creating an intense light beam. Today, these devices are still used in some form or another, but their history is largely unknown. One of the first gun lasers was created by John Prentice in 1902. In 1907–08, Russian scientist Konstantin Tsiolkovsky built the world’s first true coupé car with a smallasergun mounted on its roof – this vehicle was used for reconnaissance duties during World War I. By 1916, all armies had begun using gun lasers for infantry support; however, it wasn’t until 1945 that full battlefield employment became possible thanks to developments in electronic warfare technology.
