Hinsdale is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 66,814 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Illinois and the second-largest city in Chicago metropolitan area after Chicago. The first permanent settler in Hinsdale was James Kapp of Winnetka, who arrived on October 26, 1824. Kapp built a cabin near what is now Broadway and North Avenue and named it "Kappa." In 1827, John Stephenson founded his own town called Stephensonville to the east of Kappa. A year later, Stephensonville merged into Hinsdale. The first post office was established at Kappa on November 2, 1830. In 1837, Hinsdale had a population of 10 residents; it grew to 30 by 1847. By 1860, Hinsdale had a population of 100 citizens; it reached 150 by 1870. In 1871–72 when territorial government was replaced by state government under Abraham Lincoln as president of the United States (the American Civil War began two years earlier), many farmers moved from Springfield to Chicago for work during the Great Migration such as Elisha Pease and George Pease Jr., both from Boston who bought land around what is now Harrison Street/Valley View Drive and laid out homes there between 1865 and 1870 . This network created close ties among these families which continues today with several streets bearing their names: Prospect Heights above Howard Street / Pease Boulevard off Harrison Street / Lisle Road off Lake Shore Drive . Harrison School District No 3 opened its doors on March 7th 1889 with 8 students in grades one through four along with an accompanying teacher but closed due to lack of enrollment within three years despite offers from other districts including Rockford (now Lombard) district #2 which wanted to open adjacent schools there because they saw more potential commercial development potential than Harrisonburg Valley School District #3 did
