The name "Hinsdale" comes from the Ojibwe word Hinse (hill), meaning "a rise." The first mention of Hinsdale was on February 2, 1835, when John Stephenson and his family set out from St. Clair Parish to cross the state line into this new country. They were guided by an Ojibwe man known as Chief Thunder Cloud—he had been given that name by Major General George Armstrong Custer during the Indian Wars of 1876-1877. The Stephenson party arrived at what is now Hinsdale about two weeks later on February 17th. The village site was selected for its strategic location midway between Chicago and Decatur, Illinois; it also possessed ample water supplies and plenty of land for farming and grazing animals. In 1851, a school was built with funds provided by local landowners; in 1865 it became the first public school in what would become Hinsdale Township. In 1892, developers Edwin Potter and Hiram Sills opened up what would become one of Chicago's most promising business districts with their new grocery store/ flour mill complex at 7227 N Lemmon Ave., just east of present day Elmhurst Avenue (now Roosevelt Road). This expressway corridor has long been synonymous with Chicago's commercial core – today Lemmon Boulevard runs east-west through downtown Hinsdale while South Elmhurst Avenue forms an eastern border around Ivey Park Reserve Preserve which features rolling hills filled with Oak Bluffs trees bisected by a blackwater stream valley housing several small villages including Northaven Heights, East Moline Village and Midvalee Lakeshore Villages while another small village called Deerfield lies within Galesburg Township limits to the south along Lombard Street . During World War II many talented young men from throughout Cook County volunteered for service in the military; many residents who lived near Soldier Field whereCombat Infantry Training School (CITS) classes were offered found work cleaning equipment or helping build roads or other infrastructure necessary for war production such as bridges and dams across various rivers including Dan Ryan Expressway which linked White City to Lake Michigan

On October 15, 1872, they laid out their plat with 5 lots measuring 60 feet wide by 30 feet deep with an 1/2 mile frontage on Racine Creek; allots numbered 6 through 11 were sold to settlers before November 14 when construction began on what would become known as North Side Road or Main Street because it connected downtown with Racine Creek just east of present day South Side Road (now Wacker Drive).
