The first settler in what would become Hinsdale was John Cook in 1811. Cooksville was near present-day Harvey and he named his community after his brother-in-law, James Cook, who had also settled thereabouts some time earlier. James Cook's brother Samuel had founded Jacksonville on the south side of the river about 1803. As early as 1820, Peter Parker built a cabin on a bluff over the Des Plaines River west of present-day Village Hall. In 1830, he sold his land to Thomas Hinebaugh for $2 per acre ($40 acres). At this time, there were no roads or trails connecting Village Hall to other parts of Macon County and much of what is now Hinsdale was undeveloped rural territory dominated by rolling hills and numerous forests. Pierre Villemain visited village late in 1831 while on business trip from Chicago and noted "a very fine village" with several buildings including an Episcopal church, schoolhouse (now used as a garage), three stores, two residences - called Parkershouses - and twentyfive head of cattle; it boasted 1 mile long market street with five entrances - four off High Street -and 200 head of sheep! In 1840 David Holbrook bought 125 acres north of present-day Village Hall from Peter Parker for $1 per acre ($25 acres). At this time there were no schools or churches in that area so Holbrook established himself as an agriculturalist by planting corn and wheat fields throughout what would become known as Parkers Township (later part of McLean County) Hinsdale became chartered as a village on December 15th, 1853 when representatives from six surrounding communities met at Harmony Chapel toning up petitions for incorporation under Section 9 Of The Indiana Constitution which granted such charter status to villages subject to approval by state legislators . On January 25th following passage through both Houses thereof creating Macon County we see mention again – this time within Article XIII “And be it further determination That all persons who may reside within said limits shall be citizens thereof” This set off years worthof growth for our little corner hereabouts not only due to better transportation infrastructure but also sheer numbers attracted by our inviting slogan “Welcome To The Annexation District”
