Highland Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,521 at the 2010 census. Highland Park is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is bordered by the communities of Westmont to the east, Morris Heights to the south and north, and Elmhurst to the west. The first European settlers in what is now Highland Park were families from Scotland who arrived in 1793. They founded a small village on their farm called Banff Springs with twelve families. The original name for Highland Park was "Newburgh". In 1868, when Chicago became an incorporated city, Newburgh was renamed Highland Park in honor of General James Halleck's visit to that city two years earlier. In 1907, John Daley purchased 5555 N Western Avenue from Scotsman Robert Campbell for $325 cash and developed it into one of Chicagos earliest suburbs. This Growth District Plan (GDP) encouraged subdivision on large parcels near transportation infrastructure such as railways and parks so that people could live close to work without having to journey far outside the city limits. In 1920 Daley bought 100 acres (40 ha) of land at Wabash Avenue & Western Road for $2 million dollars which he named "Daley Manor." He used this piece of land as his personal home until his death in 1938. After his death, much of it was undeveloped because it had been reserved for parkland instead. However, developers have recently revived interest in developing parts of this property including Hartley-Everett House which fronts Wabash Avenue between Devon Place and Addison Street; this parcel has a surface area of 911 sq ft (86 m2). In 1955 Drury Lane School opened its doors as one of Chicagos first integrated public schools after building several other schools within blocks of each other on South Side streets since 1916 using funds provided by millionaire George Armour Sr.. Highland Park's success as an integrated community led to growth throughout Cook County over ensuing decades with many new businesses opening up along with more homes being built . A number of these successes are still visible today including: 1) First Presbyterian Church - built upon former Armour family slaves' quarters; 2) El Sobrante Elementary School - constructed within sight of Roseland Hospital; 3) Midtown Plaza Shopping Center - anchored by Sears Roebuck & Co.; 4) Donahue Middle School - located adjacent to current day Midtown Center; 5) Majestic Theatre Company Incorporated facility/building builder situated directly across from Northwestern University Law School In addition numerous private institutions also sprang up during this time period like North Side High school where students today learn about business administration from Joe Klein Presidential Library & Museum or even better Holy Cross High school which offers football and basketball programs alongside math & science classesAAAAA
