Highland Park is located on the east side of Chicago and is bordered by the communities of Lawndale to the south, Northbrook to the west, Tinley Park to the north, and Westchester to the east. The name "Highland Park" was given to it by Scottish settlers who named their land after Highlanders who had fought in exploits in Scotland during the Napoleonic Wars. The first permanent settler in Highland Park was James Irvine who purchased 640 acres (253 hectares) of land from Nicholas Hennepin on June 3, 1836. He built a cabin and named it Irvine House after his home country near Aberdeen in Scotland. In 1837 he married Catharine Simcoe and they started a family that would live here for over 60 years untilCatharine's death on January 2, 1925. In 1841 David Lowry bought 1/4 mile (0.8 km) of property northeast of Irvine House from James Lowry for $100USMCounty Judge George Prentice granted him a tract of 320 acres (122 hectares). Prentice called this new subdivision Domain or Township because only citizens were allowed to purchase land there at that time and notbors such as Lord Talbot had done before. On December 13th1841Prentice wrote: "I have just received information that William Thornton has bought an additional piece ot tenaculum ground near Ottawa Grove." This means that another house soon followed on another parcel adjoining Domain which became known as Thornton Place later when its owner sold it back to Prentice with an addition of 312 feet (101 m) extending its frontage at 253 feet (89 m), making it oneof largest parcels ever acquired in what would become Highland Park - much like later areas now called Chicago Heights or South Side Village! In 1845 John Fenton opened up a grocery store at 103rd St & Jefferson Avenue which became quite successful becoming one of early pioneers in selling groceries through mail order instead of having them delivered directly to customers' homes like many other grocers then doing business through hand-carrying carriers like Father Murphy's Store across State Street from Union Station where Fenton himself worked as an assistant grocer for several years prior thereto! Fenton also donated 5 acres (2 ha) southwest of his store site along Jefferson Ave., now occupied by Northwestern Memorial Hospital parking lot, for use as parkland today known as Highland Park Golf Course! The store itself still stands today but most likely burned down around 1890s when stores began being built larger downtown within walking distance then inside dense neighborhoods outside Loop & Michigan Avenues? James Middletown founded Middletown Manufacturing Company Ltd., now JMP Incorporated heretofore owned by Ferris Wheel operator Int'l Coaster Coasters Inc., based outta Buffalo NY employing 375 individuals worldwide since 1959 manufacturing all manner o equipment used aboard amusement machines including coasters!, parts for amusement track cars etc...
