Highland Park is located in the south-central portion of the city of Chicago and borders the communities of Addison and Cicero on the east and west, respectively. In 1865, Highland Park's first post office was established with John Kapp as its first clerk. In 1870, Loop Road (today's Harrison Road) was extended northwest from North Side Boulevard to connect with Kapp Avenue (then called Dearborn Street). This made it possible for residents on both sides of Loop Road to work together for local businesses instead of having to go all the way down one street or alleyway to get their goods. In 1886, John Coster opened his own grocery store in what is now part of the shopping center at Devon Place on South Lake Shore Drive near State Street in downtown Chicago. At this time, Highland Park consisted mostly of agricultural land; there were no commercial buildings until after World War II when developers began construction on Midtown Chicago's current shopping district including Devon Place Cartridge Center and other Related Companies campuses which are still active today including Macy's Department Store and Sears Tower across from it
