Highland Park, Illinois is a small town in the Central Illinois area of the United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. Highland Park is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. It is bordered by Carbondale to the north and east, Edwardsville to the south and west, and Champaign to the northwest. The first people who lived in what is now Highland Park were hunters and gatherers who traveled along present day Route 60 from central Illinois down into Missouri around 12,000 years ago. By 1800 there were about 25 families living hereabouts. In 1825 two brothers created a new town called Highland Park on land that they had bought from John Clark for $1/acre (now $26/acre). The name "Highland Park" was chosen because it was high enough above surrounding towns so as not to be bothered by possible Indian attacks or other threats that could have caused damage or destruction within their boundaries. In 1851 David Lawrence organized what would become both an agricultural society and a Masonic Lodge while living in nearby Edwardsville. He named his new community after his father's home country of Scotland – Aberdeenshire – which he had visited when he was very young and later explored with his family during their travels through America. When Lawrence died suddenly in 1859 those within his governing body elected James Haughton as their first mayor; Haughton served until 1861 due largely to his opposition to slavery which kept many residents opposed to incorporation into Champaign County without prior vote nor discussion amongst themselves!
