Highland Park, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 71,813 at the 2010 census. Highland Park is the largest city in the county by land area and second-largest by population. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Highland Park was John Robertson who purchased 3 acres (1 hectare) of land from the Wabash River Indians on February 15, 1809. He named his property "Robertson's Prairie". Other early settlers included James McGillivray who bought 1/2 acre (0.16 hectare) of land east of present-day Elmhurst Avenue on May 10, 1827 and built a cabin there; George Stephenson who platted and sold town lots west of Stevenson Boulevard on November 8, 1829; again James McGillivray which bought 1/2 acre (0.16 hectare) of land east of present day Elmhurst Avenue on January 9, 1830; David Wilcoxen who donated 100 acres (40 hectares) to be located northwest of Highland Park along Lake Michigan; also David Wilcoxen donated 100 acres (40 hectares), including what became known as "The Woods" to be located southwesterly near downtown Chicago on December 16, 1830. In October 1833 Adam Clayton Powell Sr., one-time candidate for Ulysses S Grant's running mate in the General Election that year and future Mayor of New York City filed a federal lawsuit against six individual citizens for eight miles extended from his home on Hawthorne Street between First and Second Avenues as part as an open space within limits prescribed by Congress dating back to 1789 called Harrison's Reserve which had been confiscated from him some years earlier after he had attempted to purchase it from Captain John Harrison for $4 per acre (1 ha). The suit failed but Powell used this legal victory as his springboard into politics where he would eventually serve twice before leaving office in 1896. In 1840 Samuel Morse sent representatives to sell 700 square feet (50 m²) lot at 6th and State Streets northeast corner platting out what would become known today as Morse Place while others such as Augustus Steeves organized efforts to purchase additional lands around Highland Park with mixed success until they finally got their hands on 4 square miles increasing its size from 2½ square miles when they succeeded in getting rid during the administration of Grover Cleveland in 1893 Ralph Waldo Emerson came up with the idea for what would later become Harvard University while living at 950 West Main Street adjacent to McCormick Place just south of current day King Drive Later Stillman Rockefeller developed a small petunias farm northwest corner platting out still known as Rockefeller Farmsteads . . . these events led directly or indirectly to many famous people living or working nearby including: Edward Ralston Purcell - founder & president emeritus & CEO Chase Manhattan Bank ; Franklin D Roosevelt - 40th President Of The United States ; Adlai Stevenson - 38th Vice President Of The United States In 1865 Union General George Armstrong Custer discovered gold fields southeast sideof village near then current day Prospect Heights off Indiana Toll Road leading ultimatelyto his famous charge across country against Sitting Bull Sioux Tribe during Dakota War Campaign

Highland Park is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 28,569 at the 2010 census. Highland Park is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is bordered by South Loop to the north and east, West Side to the south and west, and Cicero to the northwest. The first settler in Highland Park was David Hacket who arrived in 1827. Hacket's farm would later become one of many within Highland Park boundaries that were sold off during the post-Civil War period as property became available for sale or lease throughout Cook County. In 1854, James Ewing established a sawmill on the banks of its namesake stream in what would become known as Highland Park Township. At this time, much of what is now Highland Park was rural farmland dotted with small villages such as Deerfield and Northbrook. By 1870, most of what are now Highland Park had been incorporated into Rockford Township; however, Highlands remained unincorporated until 1905 when it became a part of Highland Park proper following an act by then-Governor William McKinley that took effect on March 1st that year. The first school in Highland Park opened in 1871; it was called "Happenings School." The first teacher was Mrs. Lisle Gibbs (1875-79). In 1916, there were 24 students attending kindergarten through eighth grade at Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Catholic School which operated out of a two story brick building on Lincoln Avenue between 79th and 80th Streets near today's Stony Brook University campus across from downtown Elmhurst High School;[1] enrollment peaked at 509 students per class in 1922 but declined thereafter due to social mores changes associated with World War I.[2] That same year saw another school opening - Macon Elementary School which served children from grades K-3 along withoptional early morning classes for fourth through sixth graders starting after 7:00am starting from 1923 until 1954 when all schools within Rockford Township opened at 8:00am only allowing Kindergarten through 8th grade before moving onto high schoolindergarten]. For about three decades prior to 1953 all elementary education within Rockford Township occurred on high school campuses though some preKindergarten classes also took place.;[3] total enrollment dropped below 500 pupils by 1957 due to suburban growth combined with increasing tuition rates for public schools outside Ofrock Township caused by state mandates regarding required equalization among adjacent districts following Decatur varsity football games played between those two townships annually since those days without any corresponding athletic contests taking place inside either township despite their location within their respective jurisdictions.? [4] In 1965 Macon Elementary closed down abruptly while still serving Toddlers thru 6th Graders thru 10th Graders thru 12th Graders thru Early College Students due to advances made in technology making learning more assimilable for today’s Children????? [5][6][7][8][9][10] One possible explanation could be that local parents simply did not have enough money/time or alternatively they may have objected too strenuously to having their child(ren) attend what would soon be considered “ integrated” public schools located just minutes away from them???
