Highland Park, Ill., is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 31,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village of Highland Park was founded in 1879 by Scots-Irish settlers who had come to Illinois from County Tyrone in Northern Ireland. They named their community after Scottish Highlands because they were landless and poverty-stricken. The town's first school was built on a small lot near the present day intersection of Kedzie Avenue and Pulaski Road. In 1902, the town purchased land east of Kedzie Avenue for its first municipal building and park. A new courthouse and jail were erected in 1922; these remain standing as examples of early civic architecture in Highland Park. In 1925, Highland Park became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and five council members; it remained that way until 1975 when it merged with neighboring Des Plaines to form the current city of Chicago. In 1992, Highland Park voted to become an official City of Chicago annexe within the newly created suburb of Oak Lawn–Calumet which contains much more affluent development than what existed in downtown Highland Park before split off from it due to annexation laws being changed decades earlier during mayor Richard Manges' administration (see Oak Lawn–Calumet annexed communities). Today, many people who grew up or are still living inside the city limits consider themselves "Highland Parkians," though they may not necessarily identify as such on social media or outside their local community (though some do). Despite this sense that one falls within one's hometown even if they have never set foot there since childhood, residents often refer to themselves simply as "city folk." The 2006 census counted 30,703 people living in 411 households in rural Cook County over all age groups: 21% under 20 years old; 23% between 20 and 24 years old; 26% 25 to 29 years old; 24% 30 or older. At least 1/3 lived in suburban areas adjacent to Lake Michigan or Holland Valley while less than half lives within any city limits other than Chicago Heights or Englewood Cliffs boundaries

Highland Park is a small city in Dixon Township, Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 14,569 at the 2010 census. Highland Park is one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the region. It was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1814 as a small community on the east side of Chicago Heights, near what is now downtown Chicago. In 1846, Highland Park merged with other smaller towns to create what is today Dixon Township. The first post office in Highland Park was established in 1814 and served the town ofChicago Heights on the eastern side of Chicago Heights. In 1847, when Highland Park consolidated with other smaller towns to form Dixon Township, its first postmaster was John Ahern. The first store in Highland Park opened on Westcott Avenue in 1850 and became known as "The Irish Store". In 1854, two men named Samuel and James Moffat founded a grocery store at 9th and Dearborn Streets which became known as "Moffat's Grocery". In 1865, Drury & Company began selling newspapers from their headquarters on Dearborn Street which soon became known as "Drury's Herald Square". By 1870, there were five stores accounting for over 50% of all business done within Dixon Township by that date. In 1870–71 enrollment at Prairie View A&M School increased from 10 students to 30 due to an offer from President Abraham Lincoln who donated $10 for each student enrolled between October 1 and December 15 that year. That same year also saw construction begin on Wilson College (later Northwestern University) – then called Normal College – which would become one of America’s leading universities. On September 25th of that year Druid Hills Cemetery opened with 4 acres (1 ha) donated by Mrs John Smeaton for use as a burying ground for local farmers and their families during the Great Chicago Fire of1871 which destroyed much of north Side Chicago including many homes located near present day US Highway 90/I-294 interchange). On November 5th 1870—the centenary anniversary since land sales started within Dixon Township—a public meeting was held to commemorate this event with ballots being cast for new trustees who would manage school finances along with plans forvarious cemetery improvements such as better drainage systems and more ample parking spaces among others items discussed at the meeting; these trustees were: Wm Higginson (Trustee #1), Jas Pritchard (Trustee #2), James Moffat (Trustee #3), Robt Farrand ( Trustee #4). At this meeting it was decided that Drury's Herald Square should be renamed "Old Main" after Mr Higginson had suggested this name back in 1860 while clerk at his grocery store where he'd seen maps depicting Old Main being used as an academy or school building back then but no such building existed yet! This event marks not only Old Main becoming home to Northwestern University but also marking off permanently East Side streets like Douglas Boulevard thenceforth becoming North Side streets like Fullerton Avenue thenceforth becoming South Side streets like State Parkway avenue etc., thus giving rise to today's gridiron football Stadiums/areas names etc."

The Highland Park area was first developed in the early 1800s as part of a land grant from the United States to Sir John Montgomery. The area became a township in 1838 and was incorporated as a village in 1851. In 1865, Highland Park was annexed by the city of Chicago.
