Highland Park, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 19,637 at the 2010 census. Highland Park is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first recorded reference to a community by name in Highland Park was "Hoppenheimer's Prairie" on May 15, 1851 when USGS explorer John Hoppenheimer named it in honor of Scottish-born businessman and politician Sir George Hampden Macintosh. The town site had been surveyed by James Edward Forbes in 1847 but no townsite developed as planned because of the difficulties associated with getting water and power to settlers on a high plateau surrounded by rolling hills. In 1853 local resident Isaac Nolen purchased from Macdonald 350 acres (14 km2) of land northwest of downtown for $1 per acre (4,500 ft²). This became known as Highland Park. In 1876 Elisha Kapp donated 640 acres (25 km2) east of downtown for use as a park; this became known as Lincoln Park. In 1907 developer Julius Rosenwald donated 2,524 square feet (211 m2) to the City Clerk for use as an office building; this became known as the RKO Department Store Building. In 1916 Mayor Samuel J Staub dedicated what is now Elmhurst Cemetery within city limits after finding that there were few burials within five miles (8 km) radius due to lack of space. The cemetery opened with just over 100 graves and today has more than 4,000 gravesites. After World War II many small businesses closed down due to wartime shortages so in 1950 Highland Park established its own police department which still exists today under the name "Police Department #1" being one of only two departments in Cook County without an officer sworn in by Mayor Joseph Curtin on January 1st 1951 – making it one of America's oldest police departments still operational (). Highland Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 381 at the 2010 census. Highland Park was founded on December 12, 1873 by the merger of two small villages: Highland Park and Mount Prospect. It became a city on January 1, 1997. The name "Highland Park" is derived from the Scottish Highlands and refers to both the park's location within Chicago's central business district and to its Victorian-era architecture. The layout of the City Hall Square area surrounding it were designed by landscape architect James Hoban in cooperation with other members of his firm The Hoban Partnership. The first settler in what is now Highland Park was John Laird who arrived there in 1837. He built a log cabin near where he lived today on what is now Hillcrest Drive. In 1839, another Scotsman named Donald MacDonald moved into this area and began farming land which would become part of Highland Park today. In 1865, John Laird's son Angus moved from Scotland to Chicago and opened an grocery store called Laddie's Store on Wabash Avenue between North Clark Street and West Pullman Road which later became known as 'the center of town'. This early grocery store played a significant role in driving settlement in that part of town and helped spur development along Wabash Avenue between North Clark Street and West Pullman Road – one of the earliest commercial corridors in Chicago. In 1870, McDonald purchased 172 acres (6 ha) north of present-day Highland Park for $5,000 from J Fenton who had subdivided same lands three years earlier for himself and his partners George Sibley & Alfred Haggerty Jr.. At first they named their new property Prairie View A&M University but eventually changed it to HighlandPark after their home state high school located nearby at Northwestern University had been renamed Prairie View A&M College (now Northwestern University School Of Law). However, JohnLaird still remains buried at Arlington Heights Cemetery near current day Highwood Boulevard/Wabash Ave., just south of Loop 2 Tollway exit #235A
Highland Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 37,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Highland Park was first settled in 1836 by Scotch-Irish immigrants who had arrived in the area from Ireland. The village of Highland Park was incorporated in 1854 and became a city when it annexed parts of Plainfield Township in 1938. The city has been named for General James Hallett (1784–1861), an early settler and captain in the Illinois militia who fought against Indian raids near what is now Highland Park. In 1839, Hallett founded what would become the first post office in Highland Park with three mail sacks sent to him from Plainfield Township. The general's name appears on both sides of a street running through the town center - Highland Loop Road - which is also its commercial center today. The original industries that developed around Highland Park were agriculture and manufacturing; however, these have since vanished as those sectors have fallen victim to automation and other technological advances. However, there are several restaurants and small businesses located within walking distance of most residents today – including two grocery stores, several convenience stores and multiple hair salons/beauty places among others!
