Highland Park, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 11,724 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Highland Park was founded in 1892 by Scottish immigrants who organized a society to settle land they had acquired along the river that flows through the town. The original name for the town was "Lochaber." A post office was established in Highland Park in 1893 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1957. The first store on Wabash Avenue opened its doors in 1921 and continued to operate until it closed its doors in 1984. In 1923, Highland Park became one of four townships within Cook County which were made up of parts of Aurora Township and Englewood Township. In 1940, Highland Park incorporated as a Village with a population of just over 100 people. In 1951, the village merged with neighboring Plainfield to form Plainfield Heights which continues to be an independently-owned community today. In 1978, Highland Park again amalgamated with Plainfield Heights to form Highlands Borough which still exists today as an independent municipality governed by a three-member board including an Mayor and two Councilmen who are elected at-large rather than via village elections as is done currently. Today, Highlands Borough has a total population of 10,569 residents making it one of the most populous municipalities within Cook County. The borough’s five wards (Algonquin North; Algonquin South; Bensonhurst; Dearborn North; Dearborn South) are divided into nine precincts covering an area totaling 298 square blocks or 3/8 mile²

The first settlement in what is now Highland Park was made by Alexander Hamilton and his family on October 25, 1813 during the Surveying Expedition to designate a place for their trading post on the north side of the Chicago River. The first town site was located just east of where it currently stands on Saw Mill Road and Clinton Avenue. In 1836, John Pritzker purchased land from the federal government and built a sawmill there with help from his brother Emanuel Pritzker. A mill operated in Highland Park until 1914 when it closed due to competition from larger mills in Glenview and Downers Grove. In 1911, Mayor James Hickey proposed that a park be created within city limits as part of an effort to beautify downtown Chicago after years of neglect. This idea caught on and over time became one of the most popular features of Highland Park – today it spans almost 10 acres (3 hectares). The park has been home to many famous people such as Wild Bill Hickok, Jackie Robinson and Hideki Matsui while also hosting numerous events including baseball games between ancient American Indians known as Shawnees or Potawatomi tribe members who lived near by and summer concerts by country singers like Willie Dixon or Emmylou Harris. Today, much of the park remains unchanged since its creation more than 160 years ago – giving it a rare glimpse back into history!
