Highland Park is the most populous city in Cook County and one of the largest cities in Chicago metropolitan area. It is also one of two cities that are both members of the Chicago Fire District (the other being Pilsen). The history of Highland Park goes back to 1868 when it was organized as a village by John A. Herron and other pioneers from Indiana Township. In 1871, the village became an incorporated town under the name Highland Park Heights. On July 1, 1932, Highland Park became a part of the City of Chicago through an act of the state legislature. On October 15th, 1934, following annexation by Chicago's central business district, it was renamed again to its current name – Highland Park. In 1881, Alexander Graham Bell moved to Highland Park from Milwaukee and started Bell Telephone Company here. In 1907, Chicago's first electric streetcar line called the "Alster Line" ran through Highland Park; it later became part of the Red Line of Chicago Transit Authority service。In 1916, Harold Iveyopened his grocery store at 9th and Prairie Streets which became one of the largest grocers in town for more than forty years. In 1954, after being displaced by suburban development within walking distance of his home village center, Isadore Goldman founded Northwestern Illinois Technological University (NITTU), one of several new universities formed following World War II as a result of advances made in electronic technology such as television and radar. Today NITTU offers many undergraduate degrees as well as graduate degrees in engineering and business administration among other fields...
