Highland Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 122,873 at the 2010 census. Highland Park is the second most populous city in Chicago after Dearborn Heights. Highland Park was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1847 as part of the Town of Northbrook on the north side of Lake Michigan. It incorporated as a city in 1912. The area now known as Highland Park was originally part of a much larger area called Logan Township which stretched from what is now the Northwest Side of Chicago to south and east of downtown. The town site that became Highland Park was located near where Logan Township ended and Mad Anthony Road began. At one time, there were several small settlements scattered throughout this large area including: Parma, Westchester (now Hinsdale), East Aurora, Lafayette (now Lansing), Mount Prospect and Arlington Heights. The early settlers who arrived in these areas were primarily farmers and their families who had come overland from County Clare, Ireland during the Great Famine years of 1845-1849. By 1870, only about 10% of all Irish immigrants living in Chicago had landed here permanently; however, some 5% to 7% of all white residents born in Chicago also hailed from Ulster or Connacht according to the 1880 U.S. Census data*. In 1892*, when Logan Township became part of Highland Park through an act passed by the General Assembly*, its citizens voted to change their name to "Highland Park." Highland Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 34,816 at the 2000 census. It is the third-largest city in Illinois and the second-largest in Chicago area. Highland Park was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1855 as a small farming community on the north side of Highland Avenue near what is now West Side Highway. The name "Highland Park" originated from its location on high ground adjacent to what was then known as "the Highlands". The first settler in Highland Park was John Hume (1789-1857), who arrived with his family from Scotland around 1855. In 1860, Scottish immigrant William Maitland bought land within present day Highland Park and started a farm named after himself, Maitland's Grove. In 1865, Irish immigrant John Doherty settled in Highland Park and began growing corn, wheat, rye and potatoes on his lands. In 1876, James Ahern purchased 1 acre of land east of present day Industrial Boulevard for $500. He founded the Aurora Brewing Company which remains one of today's most significant businesses in the city today. In 1899, resident Cornelius Keane established KEEN'S COFFEE & BREAD CO., one of first coffee roasters in America based out of his home at 444 N State Street .
