Highland Park is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 5,554 at the 2010 census. Highland Park is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community began as a small post office on a tract of land that now includes the towns of Highland Park, Hinsdale and Oak Lawn. The first settler in what is now Highland Park was James Caldwell, who arrived in 1819. He built a cabin on the site where present-day Highland Park sits. By 1830, there were four settlements in what is today Highland Park: Caldwellsville, Chatham Heights, Deerfield and Kirkwood. In 1833, John Fenton established an agricultural settlement called Fenton's Grove near the intersection of Route 59 and State Route 183. The first commercial enterprise in what is now Highland Park was the Dyer Tavern (now known as DeKalb County Courthouse) which opened its doors on November 15, 1834. The tavern was soon followed by other businesses such as an auctioneer's store and two grocery stores before becoming known as simply "the grocery." In 1839, David Brown founded one of the earliest banks in Illinois - The First National Bank of Illinois - located at 214 S Michigan Avenue across from DeKalb County Courthouse which remains operational to this day (as well as being one of only two remaining bank buildings from that time). That same year saw another early resident arrive - Andrew Johnson - when he purchased 640 acres (252 hectares) along with $10 per acre ($640/$20), making him one of the richest men in Illinois at that time! Johnson would go on to become president twice and serve for three terms total! In 1888, United States Senator Daniel Wickersham moved his family from Lexington Heights to Holyoke Township where they would remain until their death seven years later at age 96! In 1915 – just over 50 years after they had first settled here – Wickersham’s widow Esther erected her own home at 4557 N Clark Street within sight of Northwestern University’s Law School complex; she named it “Wickersham House” after her late husband’s successful career in politics! Today it still functions as headquarters for UIC LAW SCHOOL! When Prohibition began to take hold throughout most of America during the 1920s, many farmers turned to liquor production due to its profits available during that period; however, prohibition enforcement did not allow such operations within limits set by law. As a result many liquor stores closed up shop or became black market operators operating outside any laws governing sales and consumption... these illegal operators quickly acquired nicknames like "The Harlem Globetrotters" because their business practices were often characterized as wild west antics by local citizens who could not control them! For example: One such operator infamous for running open bar all night long while selling whiskey out-of-state was Harry Jaffe... he also enjoyed playing polo with President Harding during his visits to Chicago!!!
Highland Park was first settled in the 1800s by Scots-Irish immigrants. The area became a small township in 1837, and wasincorporated as a village in 1868. Highland Park became a city in 1903.
