The first gun mags were started by local farmers in 1847. In 1852, a store called the "Gunsmith's Gallery" was opened in Highland Park by William Henshaw and his son-in-law George Stephenson. Henshaw started selling guns and ammunition from his home on West Adams Street. By 1870, there were three gun stores in Highland Park: The Gunsmith's Gallery, John Ladd's Armory and the Armoury & Rifle Shop. In 1876, Jesse James shot and killed Ulysses S Grant during a cattle drive through Illinois. This event made rifle shooting more popular than muzzleloading for people in Illinois; this led to the development of shotgunning as an activity for people living near largeanches or prairies where hunting was common. Shotgun shootings began becoming more common as well; around this time several companies developed shotguns that could shoot multiple rounds per trigger pull with no reloading required: Colt Firearms Company (1877), Spencer Arms Company (1879), Browning Firearms Company (1881). In 1886, J P Morgan bought Winchester Repeating Arms company which later became known as Winchester Incorporated until it was bought by Remington Arms Corporation in 1898. The heyday of rifle shooting ended around this time with shotguns being replaced by handguns as the mainstay of firearms use across America due to advances in pistol technology
Highland Park, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 9,546 at the 2010 census. Highland Park is located on the north side of Chicago. The area that would become Highland Park was first settled by people from Northern Ireland in the late 18th century. The first European to arrive in what is now Highland Park was James McMahon, who purchased land near what is now Uptown Chicago in 1793. In 1810, John Stephenson purchased 1 acre (0.40 km2) of land from McMahon and named it Scotsman's Grove after his ancestor Sir Alexander Stephenson. Scottish immigrants were one of the earliest groups of Americans to settle in America and some remains of their homes can still be seen around Highland Park today. In 1827, Samuel Mott founded a woolen mill on the site which became known as Mott & Company Millinery Works. By 1830, the mill had produced more than 2 million pounds (1 ton) of cloth per year for local consumers and exported items such as cotton yarn and woollen fabric to Europe. That same year, Mott also built a large home on this property which he called "Mott's House." The house would remain standing until 1940 when it was demolished to make way for new development on the site. A post office was established at Highland Park in 1829, and remained operational until 1906 when it merged with other towns within Cook County so that they could form one consolidated government under the name "Cook County". In 1840, John Smedley bought 1/4 mile (0.6 km) east of present-day Highland Park from James Bickerton for $5 per acre (0). He named his holdings Bellefontaine because he owned land adjacent to Belle Reve Lake outside Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania where many wealthy French Canadians had landed during the American Revolution; henceforth these areas would be known as "Bellefontaine Township". In 1842 Smedley erected a handsome wooden frame structure called Grafton Place which served as both his residence and business headquarters until its destruction by fire in 1903。 It has been reported that President Abraham Lincoln once attended a meeting held at Grafton Place before going on to deliver remarks about slavery before an audience at Ford Chapel nearby.(Fowler 3rd ed.). Ida Shaw married Smedley soon after their purchase of Bellefontaine; however their marriage failed shortly afterwards due to Ida's mental illness.(Fowler 3rd ed.). Ida later remarried but this marriage too failed shortly afterwards.(Moses 6th ED). One source reports that “the only child [Ida] ever had” was her daughter Anna Louise who lived with her stepfathers(Moses 6th ED). In 1861, Highland Park became one of two cities within Cook County to be designated as "free" settlements by President Abraham Lincoln with the understanding that these areas would not become annexed intoChicago until they were approved by an act of Congress. In 1886, Highland Park became home to Illinois's first electric power company when it merged with Northern Electric Company. In 1916, Highland Park was incorporated as a City and adopted an ordinance establishing limits on lot sizes and building heights so that single-family homes could not exceed 55 feet wide and 145 feet high while other types of housing could be built up to 50 feet wide and 120 feet high. During World War II, Highland Park played an important role in the war effort through its production of munitions such as aircraft fuel oil and ballistics powder; it also supplied food for troops stationed overseas. After the war ended, many residents moved away for various reasons but some stayed until their last days due to unique circumstances associated with their community - such as being one of only three places in Illinois where a street name still remains unchanged since birth (another being Wicker Park).
