The history of Highland Park can be traced back to October 14th, 1868 when James W Macdonald and his two brothers decided to settle in what would become Highland Park after surveying the land they had just bought from the Kankakee Indians for $500 CAD Today's downtown area owes much of its inception to early developers like banker J W MacDonald who financed both construction of new businesses (later known as "the Macdonald Triangle") as well as creating initial infrastructure such as Streetscape which still exists today including many large brand names that have been headquartered here such as Ford Motor Company and Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company etc...MacDonald also donated land for what would become our main park - now one of Chicago's most popular tourist destinations! Thanks to Mr. MacDonald we enjoy beautiful views of Lake Michigan from our home windows TODAY! It wasn't until 1890 that Highland Park began seeing significant growth thanks in part to an influx of German immigrants who had come over on boatloads through Ellis Island following America's entry into World War I. This wave led to development along Van Buren Street - now home to several restaurants, stores and other nightlife options before becoming Nowy Światodka Street which continues south towards Addison Road where you will find several high-end retailers including Macy's department store before reaching Chicagoland Heights - once again becoming active nightlife district with several nightclubs/restaurants dotting its landscape today! Highland Park was founded in 1881 by Scots-Irish settlers and was named after a nearby high mountain range. The first post office in Highland Park was established on December 12, 1881, by J.L. Haggerty and experienced surveyor Wm.Ewing Woodruff. The name "Highland Park" was chosen to honor a range of high mountains near the town center which were seen as providingantage for the settlers. The first school in Highland Park opened on October 20, 1882, with 10 students from four different families taught by two teachers and one student from each of the three companies of soldiers serving in World War I stationed nearby on Mount Prospect Township (now Racine). The first shop opened on December 9, 1882 by Gertrude Anderson with help from her mother who ran an Emporium store next door until it burned down in 1889; this lasted until February 14 when Mrs. Anderson reopened it as the First National Bank using some of the money that had been collected during the war effort In 1886 voters passed a resolution recognizing Highland Park's annexation into Cook County and appropriating $5,000 for its construction; this allowed for streetlights to be installed and streets to be graded turning what would have been unpaved streets into asphalt drives today In 1902 there were seven businesses closed due to prohibition; these included two grocery stores (Jenny’s grocery store & Mr. Smith’s), three machine shops (Ned’s Machine Shop & Tool Works & Herrick Bros.), one insurance company (Pitney Bowes) and one barber shop (Fenimore Barber Shop). This period also saw several new homes being built including Scotch-Irish mansions such as Driscoll Manor located just east of town off Cicero Avenue now known as Elmhurst Road while other Celtic style homes were built such as McKnight Place east of town where later residents Donald Trump and his wife Ivana Trump would live . In 1907 voters passed another resolution appropriating $10,000 for improvements to local schools which included new classrooms/hallways/ garages addition along with water tower expansion adding a third floor allowing for more storage capacity . After years of planning work starting in 1906 culminated with dedication ceremonies taking place on November 3rd when then Superintendent John Prentice called out all namesakes assembled from any direction within 100 feet including those not present like Jameson who refused service because he felt they should have honored him instead given them their own parade ) During this time many small businesses were closing due to consolidation or liquidation but most notably Old Mill Drug Store which still stands today across Cicero Avenue from old High School
