The community was organized on December 3, 1868 as a result of the combined efforts of many people from throughout Cook County and from Buffalo Grove in Kane County. The first Post Office was opened in Highland Park on February 2, 1870. According to the 2010 census, Highland Park has a total area of , of which (or 98%) is land and (or 2%) is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 21,958 people, 10,811 households, and 7576 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,569.2 people per square mile (553.0/km²). There were 11,636 housing units at an average density of 553.8 per square mile (241.4/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 96% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 1% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 3% of the population

The land that now makes up Highland Park was first settled by the Potawatomi tribe in 1800. The village of Highland Park was founded in 1868 by businessmen from Aurora, Illinois and was named after the highlands near Edinburgh, Scotland where many of those businesses took place. In 1906, the village changed its name to Prairie Village and annexed part of neighboring Elgin Township. In 2002, Prairie Village merged with nearby Hollandale to form a larger community known today as Highland Park. Highland Park has been home to two universities: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UI) and Northwestern University (NU). UI moved from West Side Hall to its current location on Diversey Street in 1917 and NU moved from Roosevelt Field on Southport Avenue to their present site on Washington Boulevard in 1928. In addition to its two universities, Highland Park also features several shopping malls including Lakeshore Mall, Renaissance mall and Addison Town Center mall which are all within one mile of each other. Additionally, there are several parks within walking distance of both the downtown core and various suburban neighborhoods such as Maywood and Gurnee Hills which make it an ideal place for residents to spend their days outdoors or enjoy some indoor activities like swimming or tennis during summer months.
Highland Park was founded in 1838 as a small village on the west side of Chicago. By 1860, it had grown to become one of the most important cities in Illinois. It became a state capital in 1868 and was named after General John Fenton, who won fame during the Black Hawk War. In 1906, Highland Park merged with neighboring Sycamore to form what is now known as Highland Park/Sycamore Township.
