Highland Park, Illinois is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 12,799 at the 2010 census. Highland Park is located in the northern portion of the Chicago metropolitan area. It borders the villages of Winnetka and Northbrook to the north and west, Elmhurst to the east, and Oak Lawn to the south. The village was founded on April 15, 1884 by John Hynes and his wife Margaret as a result of land purchases from three other landowners – John Wabashtouge (a later owner of Lake Michigan island), James Haggerty (of Arlington Heights) and Edwin Harriman (of Evanston). The original plat for Highland Park listed 6 acres (2 hectares) of land for settlement with a house to be built on it that would serve as both a post office and store. By 1890 when it was revised, 300 acres had been acquired for village development with 50 houses being built between 1885-1897. In 1906–07 1/4 mile (0 kilometer) of steel wire were laid down from Wabashtouge Road in Arrington Heights eastward into Highland Park in order to provide telephone service; this became known as "the Wire Line". In 1950 Highland Park Elementary School opened its doors to students from grades Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade. A new elementary school building was constructed in 1978 which served students until 2002 when it burned down. The current elementary school building opened its doors on February 3rd, 2003. In 2006 Highland Park High School first opened its doors with classes starting in 9th grade followed by 11th grade in 2007. On October 1st 2007 Highland Park Intermediate School also opened its doors followed by full high school status on October 15th 2009

Highland Park, Illinois was once a small farming village located in the county of Cook in the state of Illinois. The population of Highland Park peaked at just over 1,000 people in 1920, but has since decreased to around 100 people today. Highland Park is known for its traditional Scots-Irish culture and history, as well as its scenic beauty. The first settlers to move to Highland Park were the McGovern family who arrived in 1851. In 1875, the Johnstown Land and Improvement Company purchased 2,362 acres of land from the McGovern family. This land would later be named Highland Park after Scottish poet Hugh Macdonald. The Johnstown Land and Improvement Company built a dam on the Kimball River which provided drinking water for their community and also offered opportunities for agriculture. One of the most important moments that occurred in Highland Park's history was when it became a city in 1924. At first, there were only a few hundred people living in Highland Park. However, due to its size and importance, City Hall quickly became overcrowded and required renovation multiple times over the years. Today, City Hall remains one of Highlands' most popular tourist destinations because it is easy to find and takes little time to visit! HighlandPark also contains some interesting landmarks that date back to early pioneers such as Auld Lang Syne Presbyterian Church which was built in 1892; General Store #2 which was founded by Alexander Graham Bell; The Fenton Hotel which was built in 1907; Joe's Place restaurant which opened up in 1922; McCurdy House Museumwhich housed an oil well drill rig until 1984; and much more!
The Highland Park area was first settled in the early 1800s. The first Europeans to visit the area were French traders and explorers. They named the area after Highmountain, a mountain in Scotland. In 1825, General James K. Polk moved his forces from Tennessee to highland park in order to campaign against Native American insurgents. In 1829, he designated Highland Park as one of five military reserves in Illinois. In 1840, General Zachary Taylor established Fort Myer on a bluff overlooking Highland Park. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Highland Park was used as an artillery range by Confederate troops. In 1924, the Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation began planning for a new city government that would include areas adjacent to downtown Chicago. One of these areas was Highland Park. The department submitted its plan for what is now Downtown Chicago on May 12th of that year and it was accepted by Mayor John Hylan on July 1st of that year - making Highlanders part of Boston's Little Italy neighborhood for the first time ever!
