Hickory Hills is a small town in the southern Illinois region, located about 25 miles (40 km) east of Chicago. It was founded in 1835 by Nicholas Flournoy and his family. The Flournoys were early settlers in this area, and their house still stands today as part of Hickory Hills' primary cultural and social center. In 1862, Hickory Hills became a charter township in Cook County. On February 14, 1892, it merged with other nearby towns to form the City of Hickory Hills. The city's history can be traced back to when Nicholas Flournoy settled here in 1835. He and his family set up shop near the present day intersection of Central Avenue and West Elm Street, which is now called Flournoy Boulevard. By 1860, Flourony had built a home on what is now North Elm Street; it served as the town's seat from that time until 1892 when it united with other nearby towns to form the City of Hickory Hills. The first scopes made in Hickory Hills were crude devices used by farmers for sighting deer or rabbits at close range while they hunted during those early days before firearms became available. In 1902, the first modern telescope was erected here by Drs. Julius Fritsch and Rudolph Bendix using a design patented by them both. This particular telescope was designed for use at Grove Park Observatory near Chicago where it remained operational until 1971 when it was sold to Caltech for use at Pasadena Astronomy Museum within California’s University System – one of only two such museums worldwide from pre-digital period observatories (D&C Reflector Telescope [1895] being the other). At its height there were over 100 scientific personnel working at Grove Park Observatory using Bendix’s telescopes including many Nobel Prize winners! On October 1st 1916 local residents came together to commemorate America’s entry into World War I with an open air picnic encampment on their property overlooking Ironton Road just south of downtown Hickory Hill! The event served as an opportunity for citizens all around Chicago to mingle and have some fun while supporting our country through wartime efforts! Over 550 people attended this historic gathering including many mayors, representatives from businesses and civic organizations along with military veterans from Illinois National Guard units quartered nearby – an unusual occurrence then & Today!

The first settlers in Hickory Hills were Levi Harding and his family from England who arrived in 1814. By 1830, there were six families living in Hickory Hills. three of which lived on the east side of the creek that forms the town's border with Stony Creek Township. In 1836, John Ransom bought land east of the creek and founded Ransomville on it. In 1847, Hiram Bowen purchased land west of the creek and founded Bowie Hill on it. In 1865, David Sarno settled near Bowman Hill and erected a log cabin called Sarno's Station on what is now State Street inBowie Hill. On October 1, 1868 – two years after Abraham Lincoln was elected President – Hickory Hills became a village when it incorporated as a result of an election held by its citizens following his victory over incumbent James Buchanan in that year's presidential election. At that time there were just five residents living in HickORY HILLS: Levi Harding (the first settler), John Fenton (a farmer and miller who owned several acres around Bowman Hill), Hiram Bowen (owner of Bowie Hill Village), David Sarno (an agriculturalist who established a farmstead about one mile north-west of Bowman Hill Village) and Abram Levy (a shoemaker). The first postmaster was Isaac Frenchmen from Stony Creek Township who served from 1870 to 1872; he was followed by storekeeper Enoch Dickinson from 1872 to 1880; then George Stephenson from 1880 until his death in 1886; finally Amos Pritchard took over for Stephenson until May 6th 1889 when he resigned due to ill health On November 11th 1902 Samuel Jankowski listed 3 cents worth of coal at Bowman Hill Village for sale to Mr Wm Laughlin for $3 per tonne Due To A Coal Strike Today most people know about Hickory hills through their high school or middle school where they attend either HICKORY HILLS HIGH SCHOOL or HICKORY HILL MIDDLE SCHOOL
