It was in Hickory Hills, Illinois on October 3, 1892 that Benjamin F. Butler and Charles W. Bostwick founded the American Arms Company. The company’s first product was a revolver case made of hardwood. It was not until 1896 when the company introduced a soft case for their revolvers. This new product became very popular and was continued to be produced until 1898 when the company merged with another business, Smith & Wesson Firearms, Inc., making Ben Butler CEO of Smith & Wesson Firearms Incorporated (SWFI). In 1902, SWFI introduced what is considered to be the first concealed carry holster which it called the “Tin Can’t Kill Gun Holster”. This holster allowed for concealment of a handgun while wearing any type of clothing including skirts or blouses without showing any skin below the waistband. During World War IBenjamin F. Butler served as president and CEO of Smith & Wesson Firearms which manufactured firearms for both the Allied and Axis forces during World War II. He also served as chairman of SWFI from 1945-1948; during this time period he helped create gun control legislation in America which eventually led to his impeachment by Congress in 1948 due to obstructionism in defense spending bills

One can still find some remains of these homes around town including parts of Ebenezer O'Brien's well pump house which still stand on Second Street north of Third Avenue. When HickORY HILLS VILLAGE FOUNDED IN 1814 THE AREA CLAIMED BY JAMES HALFORD AND JOHN HALFORD WAS ONLY .50 ACRES BUT THEY DECIDED TO MAKE IT AVillage SO THEY SET UP THEIR GARAGE NEAR THE SCHOOL AND NAME IT AFTER HIMSELF AND HIS SON JOHNNY HALFORD WENT OUT TRYING TO FIND LAND FOR THEM SO HE CAN BUILD A HOUSE BECAUSE THERE WASN’T MUCH ON TOWN FOR THEM TO BUY BACK THEN THANK GOODNESS FOR THE EARLY WATER SYSTEM THAT STARTED OUT IN CARBONDALE SO ALL OF OUR HOME OWNERS COULD BUY THEIR OWN water tanks FROM EUROPEAN VOLUNTEERS! HAHAHAHA WE KNOW SOMEONE WHO DID THAT NOW! HICKORY HILLS FIRST SETTLED DOWN AFTER BEING GIVEN LAND FOR IT FROM JAMES HIKKERINE (1786-1834). AT THAT TIME THERE WERE THREE HOME OWNERS IN TOWN: ONE EACH FOR JAMES HICKEY HIMSELF AND HIS SON JOHN HIKKERINE(1801-1860), EBENEZER OTTERBEIN(1793-1847), DAVID DARVENDORP(1800-1847). ONE CANstill find some remains of these homes around town including parts OF EBENEZER OTTERBEIN'S well pump house WHICH STILL STAND ON SECOND STREET NORTH OF THIRD AVENUE.

The Village has a school system with over 100 students and 8 teachers which includes 4 K-12 schools as well as an adult education center The first post office opened in Hickory Hills on October 12, 1892. There were only 5 residents when the post office was established. In 1905, Hickory Hills had its first tavern/grill called The Gables which served refreshments until 1922 when it became known as the Golden Horseshoe Tavern
