Hickory Hills was founded by raise settlers from Kentucky in 1837. The first post office in Hickory Hill was established on December 9, 1837, and it served as the main settlement for about two years before being discontinued because of a lack of population. In 1840, Hickory Hill was incorporated as a village and had an estimated population of fifty-six people. However, by 1860 there were only twelve residents living in the village due to concerns over malariaControl efforts that were then starting up in Illinois." In 1867, Hickory Hills became one of three towns consolidated into the city of Chicago through an act passed by the state government with support from Mayor John P. Quinn". A new courthouse and jail were built at Fourth Street and Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago; however this project was not completed until 1870 due to construction delays caused by hard freezes during that year's winter. In 1915, more than one hundred farmers who had rented land east of Rockford Road founded what would become known as Old Hickory Farms which still owns some property there today including replicate barns and outbuildings used by farmers during those days when horses pulled wagons across country freighting goods from Peoria to St territories like Dodge City

Hickory Hills was originally a small farming community with a population of just over 100 people. The first post office opened in 1840, and the first school was established in 1845. In 1865, Hickory Hills became a city and had its own government. The population of Hickory Hills decreased until it reached its current level of around 2,500 people in 2000.
