The Illinois gun law is one of the most restrictive in the United States. The Gun Control Act of 1968, which was passed after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, made it a crime to possess an unregistered handgun in any state in the Union. In Hickory Hills, there have been at least three mass shootings that took place with handguns in Illinois since 1978. In each case, a gunman killed multiple people before shooting himself or being shot by police. All three shootings occurred within a five-mile radius of each other in Springfield and Urbana. Since the early 1980s, Hickory Hills has had a few restrictions on firearms ownership and use. For example, residents are not allowed to keep more than four handguns per household and no more than twelve rifles or shotguns per individual. However, these restrictions have not stopped shooters from targeting this area specifically for gun violence. In 2018, there were two mass shootings taking place within five miles of each other in Illinois; both incidents were committed with handguns. One attack happened near Carbondale while the other happened just outside of Madera Heights in Porter County. These shootings left six people dead and thirteen injured including three children who were shot inside their parents’ home by their attackers.—[1]

Hickory Hills was founded by James Neely Richardson in 1837 as a small community on the east bank of the Chicago River near what is now Congress Avenue and Elm Street. Richardson named his town after hickories (a type of oak) because they were plentiful there and he could get them for free from local farmers. The first school in Hickory Hills was built in 1838 on what is now Snively Street. A post office called Hickory Hills was established in 1839, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1847, Hickory Hills became an incorporated village when it joined the Town of Ogden under then-Mayor Isaac Norris Jones. At its peak as an incorporated village, Hickory Hills had a population of 3200 people; however, this number decreased during the early years of World War II as many residents left for military service or other opportunities overseas. As an unincorporated village until its incorporation into Cook County in 1908, Hickory Hills had no elected officials other thanJones himself and two justices on the county court who issued rulings without review by any higher authority; these officials were responsible for regulating civil life within their jurisdiction only insofar as that did not conflict with state law or rules set by Jones himself or county commissioners appointed by him/her directly without appeal from any party other than those mentioned herein). The first post office within present-day HickORY HILLS opened on November 1st 1860 (replacing an earlier post office located about four miles west on current I-55). The thencurrent name "Hickory Grove" may have been chosen based upon some similarity between "hickories" (hardwood trees) and "grove" (a large plantation), since both terms connoteOak groves or plantations where hardwood trees are grown together with other trees such as maple syrup production facilities etc.). That same year saw also our very own first grocery store - Mrs John's Grocery - which operated out front on Elmhurst Ave., just across from today's BMO Harris Bradley Center! On July 10th 1861 our very own Mr JNeely Richardson died suddenly at home while attending his maiden ball at President Grant's Mansion & we lost one brave man... Our dearly loved Mayor Isaac Norris Jones took over Governorship duties effective July 14th 1861 until his untimely death September 15th 1862 less than 2 months later... After Mayor Issac Norris Jones' passing 2nd District Judge Lawrence Ransom assumed Governorship duties effective October 7th 1862 thru December 15th 1862 due to lack of available personnel... On January 16th 1863 new Commissioner Amos Kendall took over Governorship duties effective January 17TH 1863 thru February 15th 1863 due to Governor Ransom's illness prior to his departure for Washington D C.. New Commissioners included: George Wickersham (March 1st 1863 – April 4th 1863), Orson Seymour Garrison (April 5th 1863 – May 6 th 1863), David Webber (May 7th 1863 – June 12 th 1863), Alfred Payson Grimes(June 13 th 1863 – July 5 th 1865)), Homer Cummings(July 6 th 1865 – August 22 nd 1865)), James Neely Richardson Jr.(August 23rd 1865 – October 2ND 1865)) On March 1st 1864 our beloved First Lady Mary Ann Richards marriedMr John Haggerty who resided just south of us along State Road 42 West just outside present day Crystal Lake!1864 marks yet another milestone for this wonderful little town - First Ladies graced our town square once again! No matter how busy things seem around here sometimes something makes you feel special & love definitely starts flowing down that streeteasy :) After all these years we still can't beat that old blacksmith shop down the street from us lol!!! BBQ Joints galore too ;) And don't forget about THAT big white house right next door ;)

The original store and post office were located at the intersection of State Road 5 and Hickory Hill Road. In 1865, the Hardins moved to Elmhurst, Illinois and died in 1887. The first post office in Hickory Hills was renamed Elmhurst after the family moved there.
