Hickory Hills is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,492 at the 2010 census. It lies on the border of Will County and DuPage County. Hickory Hills was platted in 1836 by James Hickory and his brother John Hickory as part of a larger land grant to their father, Colonel Johann Baptist Hecker. The settlement grew quickly due to the timber resources available there. In 1859, Hickory Hills became the county seat of Cook County after it was moved from Maywood. The townsite contained two churches—Belmont Methodist Church and Christ Episcopal Church—and 10 residences when it was first surveyed in 1836. By 1860, however, only Belmont remained and the other homes were demolished or sold off for other purposes. In 1870, following the completion of the Chicago & Northwestern Railway through Ackerman Township (now Aurora), Hickory Hills annexed part of that township; this annexation created a new town named Hinsdale within Hickory Hills proper. The original platting party which created Hinsdale included James Hickory himself as well as his brother John and their father Johann Baptist Hecker (the original grantee). The first Firearms magazine was published in 1795 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte. At the time, guns were still being made primarily with muzzle loading powder revolvers. To make these weapons more efficient, small arms manufacturers needed to keep an excess amount of powder charge in case it was needed again soon. This led to the development ofgun magazines as a way to store this extra Powder Charge so that it could be reused multiple times. The first revolver magazine was designed by Nicholas-Jacques Conte for the French Navy aboard ship La Guadeloupe in 1795. It held 8 rounds of .50 caliber ball ammo. In 1868, John Trenchard started publishing Gun Review which became one of the most influential publications on firearms issues at the time. His articles helped popularize reloading techniques among shooters as well as provide information about new products from industry leaders like Colt and Winchester.
