It lies on the north side of the Chicago River and east of downtown Chicago. The first settler in Hickory Hills was John Redmond, who arrived in 1818 from Connecticut. He built a log cabin on his farmstead which he named "Redmond's Grove". In 1830, Redmond married Laura Thorp and moved to what is now Hickory Hills. They raised six children: John (1798-1875), James (1800-1867), Isabella (1802-1887), Charles (1804-1868), Emma (1807-1900) and Sarah Jane (born c. 1809). In 1836, John Redmond sold his holdings in Hickory Hills to Amos Kendall for $5,000 cash. Kendall also purchased two hundred acres () south of town on Deerfield Road (). This land would become Morningside Heights (), one of Chicagos most prestigious neighborhoods today. In 1840, when Daniel Boone came through Illinois on his Wayfinder Expedition exploring new lands west of the Mississippi River – including what is now Kane County – he stopped at Redmonds Grove on his way northward via DeKalb County and saw an orchard that he thought must be very large because no one had ever lived there before him! He bought two trees from red man for $10 each – a sign that this location might have been important as far as agriculture went! In 1840 more settlers arrived in Hickory Hills; these were primarily men who had migrated from Kentucky and Tennessee. One such individual was Elijah Hixon who settled around 1845 near where he later developed Park Ridge (). Hickory Hills is a small town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in Hickory Hills was John Gentry who arrived in 1812. Gentry's farmstead stood on what is now State Road 22 and he named it "Gentryville". In 1838, Daniel Gale bought land east of Hickory Hills from Gentry and built a home called Gale's Grove. In 1846, Nathan Bedford Forrest founded the Knoxville branch of the Ku Klux Klan here and renamed it Hickory Hills after his home state of Tennessee. Hickory Hill residents opposed the Klan because they saw it as a threat to their social order and community values. In 1905, Colonel George Armstrong Custer died when his horse became stuck in mud near Aiken Township (now Addison). Many people in Hickory Hills blamed General Custer for his death which led to tension between local residents and the military community that grew up around him. After General Custer's death, many residents moved away from Hickory Hill because they felt ashamed of their association with him. The first post office opened in 1892; it was renamed Washington Crossing after President George Washington's crossing over the Delaware River into Pennsylvania during his visit to Illinois that year. By 1898, there were only three homes left standing in Hickory Hills – one owned by Captain John Sayers (1849-1915), another by Ebenezer Cobb (1852-1928), and the last by Drury Ladd (census resident 1840-1900). A schoolhouse also stands today but no teaching took place within its walls until 1921 whenelementary school students came to use meeting rooms on First Street while high school students used larger classrooms on Second Street due west of Interstate Highway 95 then known as State Road 22. That same year also saw construction begin on what would become HickORY HILLS STATE HIGH SCHOOL – now known as Hawthorne High School - with classes starting on October 26th, 1921 under instruction from Mrs Louise Welsh (1883-1965) who had been headmistress at Pembroke Female Seminary before moving to Highland Park to Foundry High School where she trained future teachers/administrators including my grandmother Bettie Smith Davenport who currently leads her namesake girls’ basketball team through her retirement years at 88 years old!
Hickory Hills was founded in 1836 by Captain David Hickory and his family. The Hickory Hills community is one of the oldest in Illinois. Captain Hickory built a log cabin on the current site of Hickory Hills in 1836. The first inhabitants of Hickory Hills were farmers who raised corn, beans, potatoes, and hogs. In 1846, the town was renamed "Hickory Hill" after Captain Hickory's house. The population of Hickory Hills increased rapidly during the 1850s because of its location near the center of Illinois and its easy access to transportation. By 1860, Hicksville had a population of over 1,000 people and Hickory Hill had more than 3,000 residents. During the American Civil War, many soldiers from Illinois were drafted into service and lived in Hicksville for several months before returning home to fight for their country. In 1865, Mayor John Hesseltine donated land to the city for public uses including a park named after him. This park is now known as Hesseltine Park. The decline of agriculture during the 20th century caused Hicksville's population to decrease even further until it reached its present level of around 100 people in 2000%. However, this low number should not be taken lightly because Hicksville has some significant history that deserves attention; such as being one of only two towns in Illinois with a documented history dating back to 1680 AD!
