In 1840, James and Nancy Knight bought land from Andrew Gregg and laid out a new town on a hillock called "Hillcrest." Hickory Hills became an incorporated village on October 15, 1852; it had a population of 353. On January 1, 1957, the village was merged with Rockford to form the Rockford–Hickory Hills metropolitan area which had a total population of 831,723 as of 2020. According to the 2000 US Census there were 522 households out of which 33% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54% were married couples living together, 12% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37% were non-families. 25% of all households were made up of individuals and 10% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2 families; its largest constituent was 3 persons. In 2000, the median income for a household in Hickory Hills was $39,625 compared to $34,375 for families residing in nearby Rockford (the poverty rate for Rockford as well as Henderson County has been declining over time). In 2008-2009 there were vacant buildings located within 100 feet (30 m) or less of each other totaling 108 units; this represented 9 percent of all vacant buildings within one mile (1 km) radius according to census data

Hickory Hills is a small town in Moreland County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. Hickory Hills is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community was first settled in 1839 by Scots-Irish immigrants who named their new settlement "Hickory Hill". The name came from a hickory tree that they found near their homes. They used the tree to make tools and selling goods from their farmstead until they were forced out of the area by Indian Wars and other conflicts. In 1847, Hickory Hills got its own post office and began to grow as a farming community with crops such as corn, beans, rice, sugar beets and squash. In 1865, it became one of the three townships in Moreland County when it was created from parts of Addison Township and Oakmont Township. In 1893, Hickory Hills incorporated as a village with a population of 200 people. That same year saw the opening of Illinois's first electric power plant in Hickory Hills and rapid growth for the community as businesses opened up around it including restaurants, hotels and stores which continue to operate today. As more people moved into Hickory Hills over time there was an increase in crime rates which led to moves away from the small town until finally being replaced by larger communities such as Park Ridge in neighboring Cook County during the late 20th century where Crime Rates dropped significantly while also maintaining high qualityof life standards for residents despite this increased competition
Hickory Hills was founded in 1836 by three brothers, John, Jesse and Daniel Hickory. The first post office was established in 1837. In 1853, the family sold their farm to Joshua Ladd and his wife Sarah. Joshua Ladd became a landowner in Hickory Hills. He was an early settler and built the first home on the site of present-day Hickory Hills High School. A sawmill operated near Hicksville from 1847 to 1850. Hickory Hills had its own school district from 1868 to 1903 before it merged with Normal School District No. 9. In 1953, Hickory Hills Elementary School opened as the first public elementary school inNormal Township (now Danville). It served students until 1975 when it merged with Danville Middle School which also opened that year as a public middle school for girls. In 1978, Hickory Hills High School opened as the first high school in Normal Township (now Danville). It served students until 1984 when it merged with Normal Middle School which alsoopened that year as a high school for boys
