Ammunition has a long and diverse history in Hickory Hills, Illinois. In 1851, the first shot fired from a cannon was fired at the Hickory Creek Battlefield Park. The park is now home to the Hickory Hills Historical Museum. The first cartridge was created by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1795. It consisted of two lead balls each weighing one pound. These were used for target practice and were not meant for real warfare. In 1851, Colonel John Hoeven purchased land at the edge of town and began construction on what would become Hickory Hill Arsenal. This arsenal was purpose-built to produce cannons, rifles, pistols and artillery ammunition. The first cannon to be produced at this arsenal was a model named “Hickory Hill” thatfired a ball of metal weighing three hundred pounds that could be directed up to fifty yards! The guns also came with iron sights which allowed users to accurately fire their weapons at distances up to seventy-five yards! Hickory Hills Arsenal output continued until 1861 when it became too expensive to maintain due to technological advancements that had taken place since then! However, there are still reminders of this past Ammo History in Hickory Hills today! One example is the “Hickshire Cannonball” located within the museum complex! This ball is made from brass and weighs one ton; it originated from experiments conducted at Hickory Hill Arsenal in 1861. Hickory Hills is a small town in the northwestern part of Illinois. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. Hickory Hills is situated on a bend in the Kankakee River, and it shares boundaries with Rome, Illinois to the south, Decatur, Illinois to the east, and Crystal Lake to the north. The town was founded by Baptist missionaries in 1848 as a mission station on land that would later be donated by John Wesley Hogg. In 1856, Hickory Hills became an eastern terminus for Chicago's first railway. The town's name comes from a quote by General James Winfield Scott: "A wood sure knows where it stands when measured against others - its hickory woods". Hickory Hills experienced some growth during World War II; after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, many people moved into Hickory Hills due to their proximity to military bases. The population has continued to decline since then; however, there are now more than 585 residents living in Hickory Hill proper and its annexed communities of Rome West (including Rome High School), Crystal Lake Village (includingCrystal Lake Park), East Chicago Heights (including East Chicago High School), and White Sands Beach ( including White Sands Pier). The most notable feature of Hickory Hills is its large number of hickories - which are used for both lumber and fuel purposes. Lumbering activity has slowly died down over time; however, fuel production remains strong thanks to nearby Crystal Lake Naval Air Station. In addition to its primary economicstay - lumber manufacturing - Hickory Hills also boasts several popular tourist attractions such as Stonehenge Park & Museum and White Sands Beach State Park.
