The original settlers in this area were part of the Pottawatomie Tribe and called themselves the Herrin Band of Indians. A post office was established at Herrin in 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The first settler to arrive in what is now Herrin was John Fenton who built a cabin on a hill near what is now Main Street. Other early pioneers included James Gorman and his family who arrived around 1838, and George Witherington who settled in 1840. In 1846, Isaac Baldwin came to Herrin with his family and set up a farm on land that still stands today across from Post Office Square east of Third Street. Beginning around 1860, farmers started moving into this area for Agricultural Experiment Station (AES) land grants which allowed them to grow wheat, corn, soybeans and other crops without irrigation technology or tillage methods then available. Many of these early settlers also founded businesses such as J & W Henson's grocery store (1859), Samuel Sayers' bakery (1860), J C Rucker's hardware store (1863) and E L Pease's millinery shop (1868). In 1870, when statehood was granted to Illinois, many people from Sangamon County decided they would rather live within their own county than move away from home for government services offered by the state government. This group became known as the "Herringtonites". When local school districts were created all over Cook County during the late 19th century there was always competition among schoolsensed communities for students because one community could offer more resources such as teachers and buildings than another community did. When local school districts were disbanded during World War I many residents chose not to re-establish themselves within their old school districts but instead form new ones that resembled their former schools while using federal funds provided through military service training programs run by Northern Illinois University (NIU).
